Yes all military has the option of selecting base housing & board but most in their 2nd - 3rd years go the off-base living route. All I'm saying is teachers who are starting at $32 - $35K need to shut their pie holes and be thankful they aren't getting shot at...oh wait some of them in the hood are...so never mind.

I think they are getting paid just right, after you factor in all of the behind the scenes data.
Actually, I think they get paid pretty darned good considering that the only way for them to lose their jobs is when something bad happens (caught being a pedo, state takes over school - layoffs, murder, etc.)
There is no such reliable scale to determine if a teacher is worth a damn, but they still have the ability to go on and make tenure and have a very fruitful job security life.

School districts must, by state law, balance their budget each and every year (unlike our Federal government who can spend like drunken whores).
Districts can operate at a profit...but cannot operate at a deficit.
And..let's not forget that there are three professions for which you must have an advanced degree to be employed.....Doctor, Lawyer and Teacher (at least, in this state).

Ah, time for the bi-annual "teacher salary" thread.

Teachers starting out don't make enough, but I'm okay with the $50,000/yr stuff.
They also pay into OPERs which is supposedly a decent retirement plan.
Also, they work 9 months a year.

I for one have spoke with other teachers in my district and we have contract negotiations this year. I have been following districts around us taking raises, and most of us agree that we should take 0% for next year and the minimum the 2 years after that 1%. We know our district has trouble making enough cuts to get the budget under control and also we see and hear what people are saying. So, not all teachers are greedy, non working slobs! lol

To be "fair", teachers work about 10 months. Their summer is from mid June to mid August, that's "only" 2 months off, not 3. Now, college professors get 3 months off, mid May to mid August.
Technically the time off around Christmas/New Years is holiday.

Like some others, I think teachers on average are paid appropriately. However, I have never come across a profession who complain about how much they get paid or about how difficult their job is compared to others as this one.
In regards to concerns about how much starting teachers make, that is in all professions. However, teachers salaries rise quickly compared to the people in other professions due to the fact the pay increased are structured in the contract. It is not like a doctor, lawyer, accountant or whomever comes out of their education and earn high six figures right away. What's more, they probably put in as many weeks in a week as a school teacher puts in about two (that includes if there is homework to grade).

This is more than likely because there is no other profession that has to put up with the ridicule, scorn and questioning of their salary, hours, etc than do teachers.
What you may classify as 'complaining' is, IMO, the result of being told that they are overpaid and underworked for what they do. I have no idea what you do for a living, but if you (like most of us) were continually attacked about how much we make and told that we were overpaid, I think you would react much the same way.
How many professions have people vote on the monetary value of what they do?? Not many.
Before you ask, no....I'm not a teacher. I just feel that the profession is under-valued in our society and over-criticized. My typical statement to those who criticize teachers for their salary and schedule is to ask "If it is such an easy job and so highly paid...why aren't you a teacher?"

That question would only be a valid one if everybody had a natural talent and/or urge to be a teacher to begin with.
Not to mention the fact that not every teacher is a "good" one, much less a keeper.

While I agree with the fact that not every teacher is a good one...there are many who have no place being in a classroom.....CenterBHSFan;501449 wrote:That question would only be a valid one if everybody had a natural talent and/or urge to be a teacher to begin with.

The question is valid to everyone that says, in effect, teachers are overpaid and underworked.
If it is so good...why doesn't everybody do it??

1. "Tecnhically" - this comment was made by a poster above that said "technically, the time off around Christmas/New Years is holiday" Well, "reality" is that 99.9% of the American workers out there don't get a 2 WEEK "holiday" at Christmas/New Years and then another week+ at Easter. The majority of workers get the "day" off period, so yea, that's why people factor that time into the "three months" off argument.
2. The majority of employed workers did not start bringing the issue of teacher's pay up -- THE TEACHERS DID by complaining all the time, THAT'S WHY it continually makes the news. Again, teachers are the single most worst white collar advocates for their own profession.
3. I have never yet met (and trust me, I know a lot of them), a poor retired teacher.

Because not everyone wants to. I can say that someone has a good gig without wanting to necessarily be in their shoes or maybe I don't have the skills/requirements to do so.wkfan;501457 wrote:While I agree with the fact that not every teacher is a good one...there are many who have no place being in a classroom.....

Saying "hey man, you actually have it pretty decent" when a teacher brings up how little they're paid doesn't mean that I should go be a teacher. I just realize that they have it pretty good.
Now I think that we should pay teachers pretty well because it's an important profession. So I don't think they're overpaid in most districts. Teacher salaries, low or high, are not causing the massive problems we're having in education.

This is an example of a topic where using averages yields an incorrect conclusion. If one thinks an average salary of say $55K is right for the profession, you would tend to vote for "paid just right". If you look a liitle more in depth, you find that the average is made up of someone making $30K and someone making $80K. The correct choice IMO would be one not included, "both underpaid and overpaid".

I don't think a range of $40k-$80k is that bad. Heck, an engineer right out of college right now will make about $60k depending on which type of engineering and where they are located. An engineer in the same type of degree with 20+ years of experience is making 6 figures, say $110-130k.
So, both professions are about at a ratio of 2:1 when it comes to someone with 20 years experience compared to someone just out of college. I see no problem with the teachers $40k-80k range. You will see similar ratios in most industries.

Do you think that maybe the reason this is so often talked about is the fact that these salaries are available to the public, whereas the privates sector job salaries are usually talked about with much more generalities?
We often see this Super., or that Princip., Asst. Princ., etc being paid X amount of money... I think we tend to focus on the higher paid salaries of a district.

To criticize anyone in private sector really has no significance since it doesn't affect us, unless a stock holder.

The average in Ohio is $57,000? I believe only 1 teacher makes more than that in my district of around 65 teachers.
I've had my master's degree for over 5 years and am in my 13th year of teaching and without my coaching stipend am just short of $50,000 a year.
Personally, I feel that the salary is very near appropriate.

^^ Ironman, I am guessing you are in the southern region of the state. Many of the suburban schools in Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati are paying teachers (not administrators) in excess of $80K. Administrators in those districts are making healthy six figure salaries. I have a family member who is a teacher in Greater Cincinnati earning $70K/yr. She has a Master's and has been teaching for 10 years.
