Sad, sad day for the NBA today.

Stephen A. Smith is reporting it on San Antonio sports radio right now.

AI was a total warrior and honestly---I'm not surprised that this is how he's choosing to go out. He could've dragged it out like Jordan or Favre or so many others--but not AI.

He is one of the most fascinating NBA players in recent memory. I'm sure there's a lot of people that will hate on his swag, but people hated on Jesus, so I'm not real surprised.

Hell of a career, AI. Hell of a career.

hmmm......I thought I heard that someone was going to sign him today. Anyhow, I doubt he stays retired.....someone will convince him to sign later in the year.

He'd be employed if he would take a backup role on a contender.

The thing is, he did drag it out. There was no real reason that he needed to sign with Memphis this year. If he were to really go out like a G, he would have ended on the note he did with Detroit, bascially getting thrown off the team.

Was a good player in his day, but b/c of his attitude (practice?/thinking he is above a 6th man role instead of embracing it) he is a douche bag!!! Good riddence, jerky....

Heard earlier in the day that the Celtics were interested and then heard this. Not surprised, if he wasnt starting he wasnt playing. Sad to see one of my favorite players of all time leave the L. Great career.

I was unaware that Jesus had enough swag to be compared with Allen Iverson. I will concede that AI was truly one of the most gifted players ever and it was even more impressive given his size, but he had no concept whatsoever of what it meant to be a part of a team, rather than the whole show everytime he went out on the floor. His stock went way down for me during that ridiculous "practice" speech which was such a wonderful message for kids who idolize him. All in all, I just can't warm up to the idea of Allen Iverson being all that special. He let the most important group of all down. He let the kids down.

AI was a one man show. Not the kind of player I'd want my kids to follow, although he was a pure scorer and nothing else. Not a team player, and was a real cancer at times for a coach.

He's an idiot. He has to retire because of ego, not because of his lack of skill. I have never been a fan of AI but, let's be real he is better than most guards off the bench in the league, however because he is a selfish baby he has to ride off into the sunset. He has nobody to blame but himself.

It seems every team he was on in the last 5 years got worse after he got there and then better as soon as he got hurt or left. It got to the point where it seemed like more than a coincidence.

Good riddance to him. Was a baby in Detroit last year and again this year. If the people aren't talking about him, he isn't listening. He was a great player but there is a reason his teams never did anything outside of one season. Look at Denver and their success last year once AI was gone, it wasn't a coincidence. I won't be surprised at all if he comes back later this year but I don't want to hear about him ala Farve.

Never liked him and thought he was one of the most overrated players in the history of the NBA.
The only thing he will be remembered for is "practice"

Maybe he will go into coaching.
I always liked AI, he was entertaining at the very least.

Yeah, I'm going to have to say Iverson is one of the least likely players to be a coach.

AI...excellent player and limitless talent, also possibly the least likely player in recent memory to graciously accept the calling of "role player" for an NBA team; thus his departure.
Nonetheless, great talent...I'm not a hater. Everybody walks their own path.

lol, this is from Ric Buchers twitter, per ESPN..
RicBucher: Sources give 1 reason why teams shy of AI: yelled from back of Griz bus, "I played for a dumb #!@ last year and I'm playing for one now!"
