Are you guys reading what I'm typing? GECs have nothing to do with why I went to Ohio State. They take up roughly half your time and money. Thus are a waste of time.

A four year university's mission isn't to be a trade school. While concentrating in one area of study, the intent is also to provide a well-rounded education in a variety of subjects.

I even saw on a Maine Tea Party website "no go zones" that included actually fine areas, like U Street and Adams Morgan.
[quote/]
I don't know with any certainty where the no-go zone map came from, but there are differing opinions.

After all, as the Daily Beast reported Saturday, Bruce Majors throughout his life has almost exclusively contributed to Democrats (h/t Broliath):

According to OpenSecrets.org, he's donated about $15,000 to Democrats since 2000, including a $10,000 donation to the DNC in 2000, a $500 donation to Howard Dean in 2003, and a $1,000 donation to John Kerry in 2004. His only recent contribution to a Republican candidate was $250 in 2002 to retired Rep. Jim Kolbe, then lone openly gay Republican in Congress.

Maybe, it was an attempt at humor posted by a man who has contributed heavily to the Democratic Party and it's candidates.

Which fills the country with people who think they are smarter than everyone and those people end up in Congress and other government positions because they talk good and look good and where has that got us?

You should have went to a trade school if you didn't want a comprehensive education. Learning about literature or religion or political science can't hurt you.

I've had extremelly conservative as well as extremelly liberal professors. Not one of them has tried to force me to think their way. They just teach and explain things the way they see them. I've disagreed and made my points with them and they do the same to me. Just because I don't agree with a professors viewpoint doesn't mean I can't learn from the class.

Yep sonny, I have heard of him. Another person with an agenda. Unlike some people, he has a very open agenda. It's the people that work and finance causes behind the scenes that concerns me.

Kids today are taught that they must go to college to get a job. Colleges make it so the student has to stay at least 4 years, half of which are bullshit GEC classes. The government says "you can't pay for school?" its ok the tax payers will pay it for you. Then the kid goes to college because thats what he has to do, and guess what...no jobs...the government says "its ok!" heres more tax payer money. The idea that you can't be a well rounded person with out a college intervening is a joke but enough of the country has bought into it and we are fucked.

"You should have went to a trade school"

No personal offense meant IWP, but this is one of my pet peeves, why do folks from Ohio keep saying could/should have went? It is "gone". You should have gone.....yadda yadda yadda. When I hear or read this, I know the person is from Ohio.

And you making such a broad generalization that poor language skills mean someone is from Ohio tells me that you're an East Coast snob who doesn't know (or give a damn) about anything West of Manhattan.

See how that works?

Poor language and grammar is, sadly, almost ubiquitous in this country. And the age of the Internet has done nothing but make it much worse. It has nothing to do with where people are from.

Back on topic: I find it quite telling that the elitists in this country (and one or two on here) can look at a rally of up to 400,000 people and simply dismiss it as an aberration or some kind of mania tied to a media personality and little else.

It's the same blindness that has prompted the Tea Party to grow by leaps and bounds, and why so many folks who aren't technically Tea Party members (like me) are sitting at home and rooting them on; knowing all of these folks will be making a very loud statement at the polls in November and beyond.

I live in Virginia, and have for 4 years.

"could/should have went" is again a pet peeve....who teaches this? I hear it from my parents, cousins, nephews, nieces, etc....I really think this is something that is acceptable in places where it shouldn't be accepted. It isn't just a transposition of letters, it is a complete bastardization of the English language. And yeah, it happens in Ohio more than other places, including the poor Southern states.

How arrogant you are. You cannot possibly know this happens in Ohio more frequently -- yet you continue to make a blanket (and likely wrong) generalization as if it were fact.

As I said earlier: this type of misuse of the language is EVERYWHERE. Just as improper use of their, they're and there, along with a few dozen other pet peeves of me and anyone else who uses/used the English language to make a living.

I think maybe you spent too much time in New York, then. Your comments display the same Eastern-centric arrogance I've encountered too many times in my dealings with folks from that part of the country.

I can agree with that. But like it or not, Beck and Palin serve as a draw to the movement. If and when it really gains steam, hopefully better leaders emerge. I have to believe (maybe hope) there are influential people in those circles who recognize that when the Palins and Becks have served their purpose they need to be marginalized. My biggest worry is actually if they try to get a 3rd party candidate on the ballot in 2012 that it will pave the way for an Obama victory.

Does anyone mention the fact that Dr. King's niece (Alveda King) attended and was a speaker at this rally? Does that add validity to the rally, or is she a crazy like Beck and Palin?

It really is a regional thing. Sort of like "pop" rather than "soda". I agree, it's dumb, but it's a habit.

Doesn't really add much validity nor is she crazy (well she could be, I know nothing about her other than he uncle was MLK). Beck and Palin are still on my "crazy, disingenuous, or stupid" list.

And the people going to the rally aren't necessarily crazy or stupid (again, they could be). Disagreeing with me doesn't make someone stupid or crazy.

Why isn't Beck qualified to be a spokesperson for the tea party? Or for that matter, Palin?

What qualifications do you think are needed?

What qualifications were needed at the first and historical tea party?

Do you realize what kind of argument you just portrayed?

Most of the Left adores Colin Powell, so if he were in charge, then they would likely claim it a legit organization. Of course, Mr. Powell is of the left-center political persuasion and I'm sure he sees nothing good of the Tea Party movement. So how could he lead a group with which he doesn't agree?

The fact the Tea Party has no annointed leader is what makes it a great movement. If it had one, then the leader would be demonized, ridiculed, impugned and become the subject of every other one of Saul Alinsky's rules for radicals from the elitists. Don't believe me?--See how they go after Beck, Hannity, and Palin and you have your proof. The fact it is an amorphous organization with thousands of groups but no titular head for the elitists to attack makes it impossible for them to get their hands around. So they deny it exists, deny it has any punch, deny the size of it, deny it because it is "leader-less", and when all else fails, call it a racist organization. When they can't debate the ideals, they call it racist and the discussion ends for them. So far, these tactics have failed as the movement is larger than ever before. I'm going to bet they even deny its existence on November 3rd when they are asking..."what happened?"

The current "tea party" has almost nothing in common with the Boston Tea Party.

Palin can't articulate a thought and Beck has no means to tell anyone what they can or should do or think. Yet he does daily on his show and in his books and speeches. "We need to x or you/america will die" "you need to x to restore honor to america". Who the fuck is this guy to tell anyone that?

I love how people have (based on constant bleating from the media) bought into this idea that Palin is stupid, Beck is dumb. Whatever. How elitist! This is EXACTLY the type of thinking that has taken this country down the drain. People in charge who believe they are better and smarter than everyone else, and can make decisions for them as though they were children.

Yet you keep repeating the same CRAP over and over (Palin is dumb, Beck is (whatever), Limbaugh is a racist...yadda yadda yadda yadda -- not realizing that by doing it, you are placing yourselves in the same elitist company of the people many of you are also being highly critical of for not doing their jobs (Obama, Congress, media).

Irony truly is ironic, sometimes.

A couple of things. Limbaugh is very likely a racist. At the very least he portrays one on the air.

Can't articulate a thought = bad at speaking and getting your point across. Which Palin is. She likely sounds much dumber than she truely is (you do have to be at least reasonably intelligent to be a governor. Even of Alaska). Beck is an insane person or like Limbaugh, plays one on the network. I disliked many of G.W.'s policies and he couldn't speak all that well (though I really enjoyed listening to him speak because I liked his weird ways of saying some things) but he definitely isn't stupid despite what many who are much more left than me will say. Not stupid, just disagree.

So now apparently I'm not allowed to think someone is stupid without being an elitist taking the country down the drain I guess. Maybe crying about everything being elitist is part of the problem too no?
