Stephen Strasburg has significant UCL tear, will likely require Tommy John surgery
Good thing Boras got him a big signing bonus last year.

I hope he can come back from this, but this is a devestating injury so early in his career with the potential he has. Guys have come back from it, but it is a long road and often takes 2-3 years before they are ever really themselves again.

I've had the pleasure of seeing him twice this year. He is a stud of a pitcher, still rough in some areas, but could be a great. This is sad, but not a surprise. He'll come back and be fine, if he adjusts. His throwing motion is smooth enough to not kill his career.
The Nats will catch heat for bringing him up so soon, and maybe they did, but this stuff happens. Glad I saw him when I did.

Guys tend to come back stronger from the surgery...it's weird b/c he never really had injury problems in the past and, to be honest, I don't think the Nats rushed him TOO much. It just happens. I'm guessing when he comes back in 2012 he'll be just as good as we saw this year.

I would imagine it's better to happen now, rather than in 3-5 years. I don't know much about the injury, but I would imagine it's something that has taken place over the years, and not just this past season. So, if his ligament was deteriorating, better to just get him healthy and give him another year or two to get back. He will still be young and should fully recover from this.

They said that he could have possibly done this on one pitch, because he hadn't had problems AT ALL in his entire life. All of a sudden, you need Tommy John. That's fucking tough.

Mark Prior all over again? I'd like to hear what people who study biomechanics would say about Strasburg's delivery as I remember a couple years back, in an article about Tim Lincecum in sports illustrated, how some folks predicted Mark Prior's arm would give out.

I remember listening to one of the ESPN radio shows right after his first start. The "expert" they had on there said he would be surprised if Strasburg didn't have an injury ridden career. They stated that his delivery put more stress on the elbow than the normal MLB pitcher. Obviously, one injury doesn't constitute "injury ridden", but you have to wonder. Will he ever be the same pitcher he is right now??

such a shame. i'm not too surprised, but this is a bit of a shocker. wish him the best but if i was a betting man, i wouldn't put money on him to ever be as good as he was this past season.

He was just on the DL with a shoulder problem. Maybe in favoring his shoulder he hurt his elbow???? Any thoughts on whether Strasburg or Mike Leake, his youth team mate, will make the most money from MLB in their careers. Strasburg has a big lead!

Seriously now, everything on Baseball Tonight / Sportscenter is focused on his damn injury. Never mind the fact that a leadoff hitter had 3 home runs today and only gets a minute recap.

If he was dead, then reporting on him would be expected. It's just a damn arm injury that will cost him a season to recover. It's not like it's the end of the world. Quit trying to make him into something that he is not, ESPN. He was a stud at the college level, for sure, but he is just an average Joe in the Majors.

How hard will he throw when he comes back another 2 or 3 MPH?

If someone would like to explain to me how throwing about the same amount of innings as last year blew his arm up......then I'll gladly disagree.


This is no ones fault. If he threw 120 innings last year and blew up his arm in the 210th inning.....well you couldn't say much.

I still just simply do not understand how so many pitchers of the late 60's and early 70's came up young....threw way too many innings and did it most of their illustrious careers.

I think it is something with the lifting of weights......or how they lift or their strengthening.

You'd think they start developing pitchers that do things like Maddux in the minors....I know he was a rarity....but guys that pitch 200 innings and throw hard year after year are becoming few and far between for whatever reason.

I'm almost to the point of bringing them up too early for they are just going to blow their arms out anyways.....might as well use them when they can.

Two things.

1) Baseball sucks and I'm a troll for saying so.

2) This is fucking terrible. I feel sorta bad for him, other than the millions he's already made playing a mediocre kids' game.
