Will Berry become a star? Maybe, and I surely hope so. But at this point, OSU is loaded with a bunch of average RB's, for OSU's standards.
Last year's stats:
Saine: 145 attempts, 739 yards, 4.8 avg
Herron: 153, 600, 3.9
Hall: 48, 248, 5.2
There were 6 RB's in the Big 10 who rushed for more yardage, and that's just not something that you expect at OSU. You always expect to have a leading rusher. Now I do think that the running game is highly effective part because of Pryor's ability, but the ONE piece I think this team might be missing is that stud RB who will get you 100 yards every single game.
But no RB will get enough carries per game to get 100 yards consistently.
OSU was #3 in the B10 last year in rushing offense, which became dominant the last half of the season.
Let's look at the B10 returning leading rushers. All of those players had 200 carries.
Clay: 287 attempts for 1,517 yards and 18 TD's
Royster: 205 attempts for 1,169 yards and 6 TD's
Bolden: 200 attempts for 935 yards and 9 TD's
Ohio State Buckeyes rushing (correct stats, not the those above):
Saine: 145 attempts 739 yards 5.1 avd 4 TD's
Herron: 153 attempts 600 yards 3.9 avg 7 TD's
Hall: 48 attempts 248 yards 5.2 avg
Pryor: 162 attempts 779 yards 4.8 avg 7 TD's
Now, let's look at Wisconsin, Purdue, and PSU. See how many carries their back up RB's had along with their QB's.
Wisconsin: Ball (98 attempts), Brown (66 attempts), Tolzien (54 attempts mostly sacks for a whopping 8 yards)
Penn State: Green (74 attempts) and Clark (84 attempts)
Purude: Taylor (70 attempts) and Elliott (87 attempts)
So the top three rushers in the B10 have no other players on their team with over 100 attempts. Meanwhile, OSU has THREE guys with well over 100 attempts rushing with two guys pushing close to the 800 yard mark. If OSU focused all the carries on one RB, we would have the 100 ypg consistent runner, but we are deep at RB with very good talent.
I agree that Herron should look out, if Berry doesn't tweak his hammy last year before the USC game he would have got some reps and then who knows.
