No work

How many Chatter are now out of work?
As college students did you find a job this summer?
As high school grads have you found work?

In my life time I have never seen it this bad .... and I see no improvement for some time down the road.

Yes I did. I'm actually working a lot too. So did all of my friends. It to be honest was a lot easier to get a job this summer than last.

I saw a statistic the other day that 15 million people are chasing 3 million jobs right now. I am not sure how accurate that is or what qualifies as a prosepctive employee or a "job". But even if it is only half right, those are some pretty dire statisitics.

Sadly much of our idea of being employed, or working does not mean persons are willing to accept minimum wage jobs or many service position positions.
Nor are there companies who would find it efficient or a positive working environment to have employees doing work that they feel is beneath them socially or technologically.

Due to the drastic increase of entitlement in our country, it is only going to get worse. Everyone feels that they deserve that decent paying job with good benefits.

None of the "legals" want those jobs. Our unemployment pays more than the jobs the Mexicans work.

My youngest cousin is a 2008 HS grad, he's working for ODOT this summer, none of his friends from HS are working, not even at fast food places.

Because they're holding out for better jobs, or their enabler parents are letting them do nothing.

Or there are no jobs. I just got back from the Huntington WV area (mother is in a feeding tube at St. Mary's), if this isn't a depression, I don't know what a depression is. It is pathetic how shitty the economy is in middle America. It is a ghost town. Even the fast food joints have one person taking orders. The factories are closed and should be condemned. The university area is doing ok, but is funded on debt. There is nothing out there in many areas.

I'm employed, but am looking for a new job. It's hard because it seems like everything that I would consider a step up, I'm not qualified for. And the jobs that might be more realistic are a pay cut.

couldn't find anything that would actually pay, of course I coach during the summer so when I tell people I need nights off and Thursday-Sunday off to coach my team(I'm willing to do this since I plan on trying to coach in college) you're not going to make much money. I've found a way to do some grunt labor for my mom's company when I have the time and end up with a decent check every now and then

Patience... That's what built this country. It's the lack of it that's tearing it down.

For as big a problem as unemployment is, under-employment is an equally big if not worse problem.

Unemployment for the 20-24 age groups is over 15%, and alot of that is because entry level jobs that group traditionally would be working are now being filled by people that in the past wouldn't be working those jobs. A lot of Seniors can't afford to retire, so they are also staying in the work force longer now.

We are graduating lots of kids with a bunch of debt and no jobs. If you then have trouble making your loans payments your credit score goes to hell and that becomes a barrier to entry as employers comb through just about anything they can get their hands on anymore (not that it's necessarily a bad thing). Instead of gaining valuable work experience as a fresh graduate, for many they are getting a large hole in their resume which studies have shown can often lead to a vicious cycle of perpetual underemployment where you get stuck on a track that doesn't offer much by the way of career advancement.

I fear for my generation in some respects in that the situation with student loan debt and lack of opportunity for alot of graduates is sabotaging alot of futures before they even get started in the game.
