BETHLEHEM, N.Y. – A homeowner in his underwear chased down and tackled one of four teens who rang his doorbell and fled in a late-night prank called "ding dong ditch," leading to charges against the homeowner but not the boy.

The teen was bloodied by the takedown. The homeowner, Daniel Van Plew, and the boy's family disagree over the amount of force used and about where the tackle happened occurred, which could make a difference under the laws that define self-defense.

Van Plew, 37, told police in this upscale suburb south of New York's capital city that he was preparing to go to bed shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday when four teenagers pounded on his back door, rang his front doorbell and then ran.

Van Plew said he feared for the safety of his two children and his wife. He chased after the teens, caught the 14-year-old and then made him wait in his home while he called police. The teen suffered a cut on his elbow, a bruise over his eye and a bloody lip, according to the police report.
I would have chased them down too if I'd saw them and perhaps tackled one and called the police but I really would have just scared them. I personally don't have a problem with what the guy did. I know I and many of you did this as kids and there is not doubt sometimes you thought your were going to be chased or probably were chased after doing it to someone.

At least it wasn't the tee-ball kid. He'd be in a full body cast after getting tackled.

I would have just grabbed my gun, ran outside, and fired off a couple of rounds into the air. Then I would head to bed knowing some teenage pranksters were busy cleaning the mess in their pants.

At least you wouldn't have to worry about the lawsuit, as his parents would sue the school for rough PE activities.

That actually happened to me and some friends growing up. It was probably the highlight of our summer. I think it is assumed that when you do this you could get chased/tackled/shot at or whatever. It's what makes doing it fun for kids, the adrenaline rush. Total BS if he gets charged in my opinion.

Without knowing the law I would think he could get in more trouble for keeping the kid in house against his will.

If someone did "ding dong ditch" to my house and I was close to the door I would just open it and yell at them for being so lame for doing "ding dong ditch." No way am I chasing some kid down for that.

This is also effective, though I couldn't pull that off living within the city limits, I don't imagine.

Overkill by the homeowner, overkill by the parents.

We used to do it but we didn't call it "ding dong ditch"

Isn't the point of the whole thing to get the person mad and potentially chase after you. Hey kid, stop being pussy and learn to be a little bit more athletic than autistic.

When you are in your underwear you cannot chase down a teenager, it looks inappropriate to a bystander.

Unfortunately, it was not this guy's place to enforce any sort of punishment on these kids. I don't agree with it, but that's the law. He has no excuse whatsoever and will likely be found at fault if it's not dropped.

This. This is why living in the country trumps living in a town any way you slice it. Nobody's ringing my doorbell that I don't know without meeting my 12 guage first.

On a side note, this is why you don't try to pull this prank if you're too fat to run away fast enough. Cuz you know it was the fat kid that got caught.

Eh. I have a few pizza places in town about 10 mins away so it's not too bad, but 75% or more of what I eat is right out the back door of my house or something I shot in its respective hunting season or caught in my pond lol.

If I got ding-dong-ditched, I'd open the door to nobody and close it as if I didn't care. This would upset the kids doing it (since you KNOW they're always watching), and I know they'd come back. When they're planning their second attack, I'm exiting out my back door and getting ready for them. This time when they ring the door bell and run, I'm right there when they turn around, with a paintball gun in their face. OK. Maybe not a paintball gun, but I'd be there waiting for them. I've thought out what I'd do if I was getting TP'd, too. Sneak my way out of my house and off my property and find their vehicle(s). Write down the license plate numbers, then whisper loudly "C'mon, let's go!" to get them to come back to the car, as if one of their friends saw someone. When they come back, I'm waiting there for them.

I used to TP people ALL THE TIME! I used to ding-dong-ditch, too. I never got caught, but I'm set on catching someone some day. Haha!

Oh, and tackling the kids is probably too much. But the parents trying to bail out their kids that did something stupid? This seems to happen too often.
