You can't underrate the OJ Simpson trial. It divided the country along racial lines, mocked the justice system, and changed the media. People didn't stay home all day or up all night to watch the gulf war coverage, but they damn sure did for the Simpson trial. It made 24/7 news outlets viable and successful

I agree that the OJ Ordeal was distinctly American and a huge media circus, but in terms of degree of significant impact and importance, it doesn't even make my Top 25.

Even WITH 9/11, I think the financial collapse/housing crash/Great Recession is the winner.

But my "vote" (because I didn't vote for him) is probably Obama's election.

Well technically, the Internet has been around before the 1980 time-frame given. Then you have the first E-Mail which was sent in the 70s as well. The internet isnt really an event either. It is a transformation, which has taken decades to becoem what it is. Even since it has been popular, it has taken 10 years to get where we are today (and that isnt even 25% penetration rate worldwide...although it is about 75% in America).

people seem to be confusing "signature <i>moment</i>" with broad things (Internet) or things that didn't really matter on the big scale (Lewinsky, OJ)

Oklahoma City by far. Even more so after the interview he gave to MSNBC. Guy is crazy. And that is the 2nd largest terrorist attack on our soil other than 9/11 correct?

This shouldn't even be a discussion:

1.Election of Barack Obama
2.Death Of Michael Jackson
3.Challenger
4.Katrina
5.OJ/Fall of Berlin Wall

Jesus Christ not again.

I'm not even going to discuss this with you because you seem too ignorant to realize the significance of his death

the only significance of his death was the collective sigh of relief from parents of pre teen boys around the world.

No I get it, you are an MJ fan and I am not, thats why our opinions are going to differ.

That aside, I do not think that ANY entertainer should make the list. Their contribution to society is simply not as crucial as some of the other events that have been mentioned.
