I'd probably have taken the MJ death thing more seriously if it had happened a decade or more earlier. Dude was an iconic entertainer. It'd be a matter of perspective whether the death of an entertainer should be considered a "signature moment" of a generation under any circumstance, but if he'd died in, say, 1996...there would at least be some degree validity to the notion.
The thing is...his peak music release days ended in the mid-90s. While the one he put out in 2001 was a big-seller, it didn't compare sales-wise to his peak albums. I'm sure that, to his big-time fans, nothing changed...but to the average person, he seemed to devolve into this freakish-looking creature due to all the plastic surgery and the number of allegations concerning his sex life also served to detract from the general perception of him.
Can't speak for everyone here, but my general feeling on his death was a "Meh...bound to happen sooner or later..." thing and that was that.
