I call myself an atheist but I never called myself a humanist. That's a label someone else has put on me.

I think atheists like to be known as naturalists now (supposedly the smart ones). I guess why even give a god the pleasure of refering to him in your title if you don't believe in him. Believe in science....

I believe facts over faith. There could be a God and I will never say 100% there is not God, but until it's proven I am not going to believe in fairy-tales. I believe religion was a way to control the masses by using fear. Then look at how much death and destruction all religion has brought upon mankind?

Ive always said that there's no such thing as a real atheist. People may not believe in God or a god in the traditional sense, but they do believe in the power of the human mind and ability or science. Whatever they believe in becomes their god.

I feel we should strive to be humanists, but it is impossible.

Our minds are not wired to let go of dogma, speculation and that which cannot be measured, felt or studied. Our evolution has produced a psychological need for such things as a coping mechanism for death and loss. Even the greatest humanists in history often late in life find solace in anti-humanist thought. We all need some sort of dopamine or opiate to get ourselves through life.

I think it's fine for anyone to hold whatever views they want. But I do think it's equally important to hold views that are reasonable, rational, defensible, and internally consistent. Though this has been debated numerous times on the OC/Huddle, it's worth pointing out again: simply noting that human interpretations of the divine haven't worked out well does not, from a logical standpoint, cut against religion, particularly against those religions that emphasize human fallibility. Undoubtedly religion has resulted in plenty of death and destruction. This doesn't cut against theism, as a rule.

It's also extraordinarily unlikely that, as you suggest, someone invented religion as a way to control the masses through fear. Virtually all cultures in all areas of the globe for all of humanity have practiced some sort of religion, and it's unlikely to the point of impossibility that this arose independently in each as a way for someone to manipulate and control the others. It's far more likely that people have a natural tendency to be drawn to the supernatural, either via Berger's "Sacred Canopy", on the one hand, or Pascal's "God shaped hole", on the other.

I think atheism can be summed up by a bit done by Richard Lewis in stand-up:

"When atheists have sex do they say 'OH, OH, OH,..... OH, I don't believe in your existance!'"?

I strongly believe in God but we are not suppossed to walk around making dumb choices and acting like fools. Religion gives a guideline within which we should live our lives and gives us examples of how to treat each other. Unfortunately most people choose to ignore this and use religion as a means of oppression.

There's an old saying: Never let the Church get in the way of your religion.

I believe in God, but not necessarily "religion". I think the Church has caused many more problems than it's helped over time, and I think Jesus would be appalled if he heard some of the things coming out of the mouths of some so-called "preachers".
