Funny thing is... in my neighborhood I am not even "that guy."

You guys must have some nice lawns then. haha

I cut mine with a Scag zero-turn, it's a monster. It almost makes it fun...almost.

Thanks for the input.

It's even more than chores for our kids however.

Balance in life is an instrumental lesson we focus on with them.

We insist that they have substantive activity in the following areas:

Family
Education
Physical
Vocation...in the case of kids that would be their chores
Social

All of this must be centered around their spiritual development. It's the most important thing in their life that creates the foundation for all other activities.

Without stimulation in each of these areas they will not be as effective in their area of choice.

I can assure you that athletics is not THE most important thing in their life. It simply is a decision that has commitments which overrides the lawn being part of their chores.

I cut my own lawn but as soon as my daughter is big enough, SHE'S mowing...and I could give a rat's rear how good a job she does.

I live in a typical materialistic middle class neighborhood with ANAL idiots who live for their yards...You know the mulching and flower beds and landscaping and solar lights and all the other bullshit that mean squat to me.

To me it's a royal pain in the ass to mow and I do it once a week even if I should do it more often. I sometimes get "the look" from some of my ANAL idiot neighbors but screw 'em.

So when the time comes I'll pay my daughter to screw it up and really get the ANAL idiots going! lol

We disagree about basically everything on politics, but we're on the same wavelength here. I have about 100 things more important to worry about than lawn perfection. As long as it's mowed and isn't a foot high, it's fine! Sure, there are some standards (living in a jungle looks bad) but fuck perfection.

I blame this on my dad back home, we live 500 feet off of the fucking road, and there is a property directly in front of us and he is STILL anal. No one can see it unless they come to visit us (and no one does). Wasted effort is an understatement.

I know I'm not normal, but I love to mow the yard and do the edging and weeding and all the rest. I Would rather not give this job over to kids because number one, my youngest son is 32 and my oldest is 41 and they are very busy with their own lives and I am very good at the gardening stuff and I want it done right. The grandchildren have a lot on their respective plates and it's a much different time than when I was growing up. I was pleasantly surprised the other day when I got home and my daughter in law had come over and mowed the front and back yards for me, but the truth be known, I would have much rather done it myself, although she did a very nice job.

You better let them (those who feel they are "helping" you) know this is your area. You're older than I, but they need to know this is your sanctuary so to speak. They'll understand.

Kids now-a-days have no freaking clue. Do kids cut grass anymore? Yes they do, but not many of them do and the ones that do cut grass do the shittiest job you can imagine and complain about it.

Put your iPod away, turn off your cell phone, no PS3 or XBOX... GET THE HELL OUTSIDE AND CUT GRASS!!!!

I have a 14 and a 12 year old son. They mow our yard, pull weeds, help around the house as much as possible. I do yell at them from time to time about putting down the controllers fro XBOX.

My daughter at the age of 9 years old was taught to drive the 16 HP riding mower and cut the grass with dad, do the mulching, weeding and the gas power weed eater (they did not do the bank on the side of the house with the rider) and as for a power push trim mower yes they operated it also at the age of 11 year old. The girls loved doing the yard and now I'm teaching my granddaughter to do the grass.....

Nothing wrong with a little work to bring a family together......

Not the change the topic but I would have to say that today youth 14 to 25 years old can't change a tire. They have no idea of want to do or do they have to muscle to do it.
Note: My daughter learned how to change a tire when they got their diver license ...Part of the Belly requirements to growing up.....

Well said. Sounds like they're on the right and narrow path. ;)

I've had this similar conversation. With kids being in such a digital age, are they relaxing on the basics. Get out and play...physically not digitally. Will these kids be able to carrying on a conversation one on one if all they know is to text them? Will they know body language and to talk respectfully and the timing involved. I'm for goodness sake, they they pay admission to an activity and sit and text and not even follow what's going on.

Sorry, my generation did not have cell phones and we went out, yes by ourselves even, and came back all right. "In case they get in trouble" IMO, that is a cop out. I have enough bills than to add another so our child can say "What's up"

oh jesus christ, another one of those threads that are degrading the younger generation. When I was in high school, I played football, basketball, and ran track all while maintaing a job, girlfriend, hanging out with friends, and at home chores. I work a physical labor job now and probably about half of my work is yardwork. I worked 44 hours this past week, not including mowing and weedeating my both of my parents yard and other chores..I also text and play video games, who gives a shit. I dont have maybe but one friend who "sits in his house and plays video games all day" and he is fat. Not every kid in "todays younger generation" is like that, but you can usually tell because they are obese. GUESS WHAT. YOU PEOPLE ARE THE ONES WHO RAISED OUR GENERATION

I will never understand that one. I was never formally shown, but one day I went to head home (I was 20 at the time) and had a flat. It wasn't exactly rocket science to get the spare on there and drive the flat to Walmart to get it fixed.

This to an extent, especially with certain baby boomers (we all know which ones).

You bought the video game for them, you bought the cell phone for them, you are the one who chose not to establish any boundaries regarding them, you are the ones who don't make them do chores, yet you are the ones who bitch about how we're all doomed. Stop acting like god just magically flipped a switch in 1980 that made everyone produce shitty children. SOME people (not all) do seriously need to look in the mirror. Don't throw stones from glass houses.

No one is saying that.

What people are saying is stop pretending like it just magically happened without any help from the previous generation.
