The Ruskies want a deal on missile defense, mainly a legal treaty that the SM-3 won't touch their nukes. Which the U.S. won't do unless the Russians agree to limits on their tactical nuclear weapons. And even then, the U.S. probably won't sign a legal treaty saying that.

Basically, what the President is saying, is any discussions on missile defense or nuclear arms reductions will have to wait until after the election due to 1. The President does not have the manpower to head into discussions, and 2. It makes no sense to head toward a deal when no way anyone in the Senate will touch it.

What the adminsitration will offer is to allow the Russians to see the burnout data of the SM-3 Block II B to show it can't hit a Russian ICBM, which it can't. Plus, we will invite the Russians to participate in the NATO system. (Radar mainly)

The President is not going to cave on missile defense, not at all. He is not suddenly going to kill the SM-3 Block IIB. He just wants to get a hell of a lot of the Russians before we start any dialogue on regional missile defense architecture.

So, I didn't and wouldn't make anything out of it.

Indeed, I'm glad the Dow is up, but it's because that's the "safest" place to mark money right now for investors here and overseas. What else are you going to do with your savings. Bond rates are in the crapper, interest rates are still being artificially low and if you hide it under your mattress you are left with inflation at the gas station and the grocery store.

It's been steadily increasing since about 2003-4 (in large part due to increased demand). On April 10, 2006 it was $2.76/ga (Midwest avg). April 7, 2008 it was $3.40. April 12, 2010 it was $2.93. Last week, $3.98. That's an annualized increase of 6.3% from 2006.

I went from $1 to $4 while they blew up the bubble in the 2000s. Then fell below $2 after the bubble burst. Now it is $4 again 3 years later even though supplies are as high as they were at the peak and demand is lower than it has been in at least 20 years.

This is a crock of Santorum. Global demand for gasoline is way up over the last 10 years. US demand is up slightly as well. US refineries are antiquated, but running at about 80% capacity.

Gas pricing will not go down because the gas companies will dial back production to keep thier order files and delivery times long.

Even if oil goes back to 80.00 per barrel, you will only see a modest decline is gas prices.

Maybe Obama shoould declare a national energy emergency and prohibit the export of gasoline :rolleyes:

You have to pay attention to the seasonality. Demand fell off a cliff in the great recession so of course there was some over correction. But the fact is it's only increased an average of 6% a year since 2006.

Gas prices are not determined by US demand, it's a global curve. China and India are using more and more every day. Article just the other day that even the Saudis are using a lot more of their own oil.
