Yes, I am a Notre Dame hater, but follow my logic.

Problem: Notre Dame hasn't won a National Championship in about 25 years. They haven't even won a BCS game. They are losing half the team, and no one really wants to play there anymore. Recruiting sucks.

Bigger problem.: their constant refusal to join a conference results in a crappy schedule. It was weak this year and they couldn't win. Its even weaker next year. Yeah, they occasionally schedule oklahoma or someone, but other than michigan and usc, they hardly ever play anyone good.

Biggest problem: GE, who has owned NBC for most if not all of NBC's existence, is trying to sell the network. If they do, the new buyer really won't want to be tied to ND. No coverage means less publicity means less fans means less recruits.

So until they join a conference, ND is pretty much screwed.

I disagree. Notre Dame just needs to find the right coach. Look at Alabama in football. They found the right coach and they were in the national title hunt in less than 2 years. Look at Kentucky in basketball. They found the right coach and have a chance to be the best team in the nation right away. A great coach can sell Notre Dame to recruits and compete for a national title just by signing a contract.

The key is to find the right coach. They have whiffed twice in a row now.

Dunno - how much money does NBC make off the ND broadcasts? Somebody has to support Jay Leno.

While I'm no ND fan, their schedule is no worse that most of the BCS school over a period of time. When you schedule years in advance, it's really difficult to predict how tough your schedule will turn out to be come time to play.

It doesn't mean I don't enjoy watching their fan base devouring itself, though.

Yeah, I second what Azu stated. Bama was pretty much in the same situation. Then they shelled out the bucks, got their guy and could win a national title this year.

I disagree...I think kids want to come to ND. They just want to play for a guy they think can win, and the past 3 haven't been consistent winners. Not since Lou.

Another thing is that kids these days do not care about TRADITION! You can talk to a 17 year old recruit all you want about the rich history of Notre Dame, but he wasn't alive when the Irish was on top of College Football. Kids now go to a school that gives them the best chance to make the NFL. That is just how it is these days.

But alabama has a conference which ensures they have a decent schedule, and they have televised games. The bottom line is ND has no conference, and if NBC drops them, because most of the time the games don't make nearly as much money as the other televisrd games of the day. Granted they were at seperate times today, who do you think makes more money, ND UConn or OSU Michigan? NBC's new owners will no doubt want a bigger piece of the pie.

ND will be fine post-weis and NBC is not going to drop them after decades of partnership. Even if they did, they could move to the YES network, building on their growing working relationship. The only concern there would be a yankee games on Sat and ND could set their game sched around the yanks if need be for August-October. Actually if you bring in some kind of partnership with a satelite company like direct tv for ND fans who don't get YES, there are alot of people who might make the switch just for their fav football team. God knows many did for big 10 network.

I see your point, but you are making a LOT of assumptions. My point was that if ND makes a change now, finds the right coach, it will be a short turnaround before they can compete for a title. Remember, it's NOT about getting big time opponents or being in a conference. ND already has a built-in advantage in this system. They just have to find a coach that can use the ND name to recruit and have an 11-1 or 12-0 season. Whether they play anyone or not doesn't matter, that record will get them in the hunt. The key is getting to that point though...

Notre Dame needs the Big Ten more than the Big Ten needs then.

Why do they need the big 10? Having to play the likes of Minnesota, Indiana, and Northwestern would be the equivalent of playing BC, UConn, and Pitt and we've already heard in this thread how ND doesn't play anyone good. Wait, that would actually be a schedule decrease from where we stand now. There are a few good B10 teams and ND has had them on the sched off and on for years so we get to play the teams that actually matter...and get to pick better teams than the bottom level conference bums to round it out.

Now weis and co. not being able to seal the deal against teams who we ought to beat is a whole nother topic.

Alabama is a poor example of turning it around. Bama has good weather, a better coach and plays in the SEC. Every kid in the world sees "SEC" because of the media and the Bias in polling that favors them in the current system. ND gets none of that. Shitty South Bend, no conference and a crap coach.

ND just needs a coach. Once they get someone who knows how to beat teh NAvy's, UConn's and Michigan's of the world, they will be in the top 25 again. Once they get someone who can beat the USC's of the world, they'll be in the top ten.

You myfriend must be drunk off of your ass. Bama is a great example. Good weather, great recruiting, and a coach with realistic expectations, and a conference which provides strength of schedule.

As for the teams you mentioned, the only one they should beat is army. Utah is a great team, they have been consistently ranked and will kick ND's ass. Navy has been great recently, and western and tulsa aren't gimmies.

As for michigan, a michigan team full of freshmen beat a Notre Dame team full of seniors. You must be stoned if you think that is a gauranteed win.

I'd be careful tossing around 'great' with those teams. Utah has played a bunch of nobodies and the only two teams who are 'great' that they played they got smacked in the mouth (Oregon/TCU). Same with Navy, the only team of note they beat was ND. They're not great teams, they're teams who do what ND has been unable to do under Weis...consistently beat the teams on your sched you ought to beat.
