The figures show Cleveland had the largest numerical decline in residents, dropping 2,658, or nearly 1 percent. It was followed by Detroit and Flint, Mich., which lost 1,713 and 1,382 people, respectively.

This isn't news. Most large cities like Cleveland have been declining in population for years, even before the recession

I'm too lazy to look up the numbers, but that can't be right can it? The jobs are in major cities, so I would think there would be a move towards the bigger cities? Just not cities like Cleveland and Detroit due to the economic reasons.

My guess is that people are moving to the suburbs and out of the "city."

While the jobs thing is true, people often opt to live in suburbs rather than the actual city. Most cities are "growing" by annexing surrounding townships.

Columbus is guilty of that, that's why they show a population increase as opposed to a decrease.

In Cleveland though people are not moving out of the city and into the suburbs, people are leaving the area. I remember a couple of years ago when the census projections came out they said that the city of Cleveland was declining and that it had been for years, but that most of the suburbs had been growing, but that every Cleveland suburb was beginning to shrink as well. It's not people migrating out of downtown, they are just simply leaving the area all together.

Serious question...I've met dozens of ex-Clevelanders who moved to Columbus over the years and then continued to babble on and on about how f'n superior NE Ohio is to C-bus. Does anyone know one single person who ever moved from C-bus to Cleveland?....nope? neither do I.

I've NEVER met anyone from Cleveland here in Columbus that has said that. I don't by any means think Columbus is a great city, but I do think it's a good city. I think Cleveland is horrible. I actually really like Cincinnati and think Cincinnati is very underrated.

Cleveland is far from horrible. Just like any major city it has it's good parts and bad parts. Columbus and Cinci are the EXACT same way.

They moved there on their own after college. All have good jobs and love living there. I visit them occasionally and always have an amazing time. It's a great city to go out in. There is a lot to do and I always have a blast.

My brother also lived in a suburb of Cleveland after college. He loved it. He now lives in Arizona and would love to move back to Ohio and end up in the Cleveland area.

The suburbs of Cleveland are great. It's once you start venturing out a short way from downtown (IN the city of Cleveland) that you'll run into crapiness.

I love Cleveland. I'm down in Cbus right now but I have plans to move back when I'm done with school. Cbus and Cleveland are just about even for me, I cant say that I like one more than the other. Cincy is a dump imo.....I've been there several times and havent been impressed

I agree that Cincinnati tends to be a bit underrated. Although, the bad parts of Cincinnati tend to be REALLY bad, and the good parts tend to be really good. The other thing about Cincinnati which maybe leads to why it's so underrated is that the best things about Cincinnati aren't really in Cincinnati, but in the suburbs (like Newport, Mason, etc).

Don't you get bored of being owned by Cleveland? I have no allegiance to Cleveland, but it's obvious it is in your thoughts 24-7. You more you sweat it, the more it owns your ass.

My son graduated from Cincinnati a number of years ago, and my wife and I loved going down to Cincinnati to see him and go out. The downtown area was very pleasant with a lot of nice restaurants, the Serpentine Walk and lots of other stuff that attracted us to the city. We developed a real addiction to Skyline food when we started going down there also, and although it just hasn't caught on in NW Ohio, we love it and stop anytime we're in Cincy. Columbus is also a fun city for me. Most of my trips there have been for athletic purposes, but I found the nightlife a lot of fun and always seemed to have a great time....usually in the general area of High Street and the campus. Cleveland has improved their downtown area markedly from 15-20 years ago but it rates third of the three in my book, although I think the gap is narrowing.
