Question for you chatterererers. Women, long time married men, gay men... How much is custom to tip a hair dresser? My wife just got a perm this past weekend. She told me it was $50. OK, that's fine. I look at the check book, and she wrote a check for $70. Immediately, I'm like, W.T.F.!

She says, "I had to tip her!"
To that, I say, "$20!?!?"

WTF?!?! Is this customary? Twenty freaking dollars for a tip!?

My wife is a beautician. $20 is a little steep for $50. $10 would have been sufficient. Beat the extra $10 out of your wife and hope she doesn't get a spiked tooth condom next time you bang her.

It is total BS tipping a hair dresser at all. I have been going to the same guy that cuts my hair for over 20 years and I never ever tip him and I get a fantastic haircut. He does not hold it against me or anything of the sort. In fact, he schedules my appointments 5-10 minutes longer because we always get talking and laughing, etc. I usually get him a bottle of booze at Christimas to show my appreciation.

Waitress and waiters get tipped because they make BELOW MINIMUM WAGE. Hairdressers DO NOT make below minimum wage. There is no need to tip them.

My fiancee is a cosmetologist at a higher end barber shop/salon and I've asked her about this once. Most of her clients are men, and they charge $23 for a men's cut. Most guys will give her $30 or $35 and tell her to keep it. Women tip a lot more.

There's a few reasons for it. For one, it only takes her about 30 minutes to cut a guy's hair. For women, the cut alone is an hour. If there's a color involved (or a perm) it could take longer. She's had girls that have been in the chair for 3-4 hours before! So the tip isn't necessarily based on the price set by the shop. The tip is based more on how long it took to get everything done.

A perm takes a long time to set up and then process if it's done right. So while your wife was there...that stylist missed out on probably 2 other clients...and 2 other tips.

That's at least how my fiancee had explained it to me a few years ago when I had asked her about how much people generally tipped her.

Actually...hair dressers make really close to or below minimum wage. It all depends on the shop. Sometimes the stylist has to rent the chair from the shop...meaning they have to pay between $500-$1000 a month regardless of how much they make. So they have to do that much just to break even.

At other shops, the stylists are on a weekly (or bi-weekly) commission based pay. At a good shop, they'll get somewhere in the range of 10% of however much the cut/color/style cost.

The only people that easily make a lot of money just on the cuts are the owners of a shop. But even then, most of that money is going back into their shop and not towards their bills at home. Make no mistake, barbers and stylists need those tips...and the guy that cuts your hair talks major shit about you when he gets home to his wife.

Not to mention that stylists have to pretty much be entertainers, Ann Landers, psychoanalysts, comedians, mind readers and the most congenial person in the world at the same time.
Also, people tend to tip well the people who manage their hair; and for women, their hair is practically their outward identity. (especially women with long hair)

I tip $6 or $7 on a $30 cut.

I tip around 10% ($10-15). And yes I know I pay an outrageous amount to get my hair done. Spare me the criticism.

My haircut is $9 and I just give the barber a 10.

Started going to a new place, I tipped $6 on a $30 haircut. I used to tip $10 on a $21 haircut, however, the reason I did that was because I was a longtime client and he charged me $21 when all others were charged $35, so that was more of an appreciative gesture.

As for not tipping ... are you fucking serious? Come on now, you always tip, unless the guy draws blood or gives you a mohawk! Come on now.

My wife was in the chair for 3 hours. If it is SUPPOSED to cost $70, then freaking charge $70!

My barber charges $9.00 for a haircut. I give him a $10 and tell him to keep it, 100% of the time. So, an 11% discount. My wife says that it is customary for 20%. Bull shit. I could see her giving $10 for a tip, but $20 is ridiculous.

Not where I'm from. The lady that cuts my hair pays rent and nowhere near that! She charges $20 to cut both me and my son's hair and it take about 15 minutes total. She makes $80/hr off of us. No need to tip.

The salon my wife works at (she doesn't do hair) get like 55% +.

I also wasn't too happy with my wife when she told me that it only cost $50. Beating will ensue... unless sandwich is provided.

The old lady cuts my hair and I tip her at least 4 times a week.

She works at a small shop called Great Haircuts. It's on the corner of Madison and Edwards...in the same strip as Bonefish Grill and the Hitching Post.

The cut usually costs 10 and I usually give them 15 depending on how good she does or how good looking she is lol.

I do think tipping when just getting a cut is an appreciative gesture, but when some women are paying over $100 for their hair being done, I don't think a tip should be involved. Set your prices accordingly and tips would not be needed. IMO, any job that requires being tipped I just look at as kind of a lower scale job. I'm not saying being a hairdresser is, but I view it as waitresses and bartenders need tips, someone that is charging 100-200 bucks to do a woman's hair should not need a tip.

Just got my haircut yesterday. The price WAS $13.50 and I was just giving the girl a $20 bill and telling her to keep it. Bastards raised their prices to $15.50 and she still got the same $20. I'm not going outside of that $20 for a haircut. If she wants a bigger tip, then they better lower their prices (which won't happen).
