There are some activities that everyone agrees are sports (football, baseball, basketball, etc), but there are others that people debate. So, here is your chance to vote on five different activities that some classify as a sport and other don't. Please vote for either Yes or No with each sport. Also, if you'd like, include your definition of sport. What makes one activity a sport and another activity not a sport?

Competition Cheerleading
Golf
Auto Racing
Horse Racing
Poker

Just going to post my answers not going to give any reasons why I feel that way because things like this are stupid to argue about because everyone already has their opinion and its not going to change. The meaning of what is and what isn't a sport is subjective to everyone.

The point isn't to convince anybody one way or the other, the point in understanding each other's viewpoint. What's why I asked for a definition, to see how different people evaluate different activities to define them as a sport or not.

Haha alright I gotcha although I still think that a pissing match is going to happen sometime in the thread. I'd post what I define a sport to be but right now my defintion contradicts with what I said isnt a sport(Horse Racing). So I need to think about it more :P

ESPN always calls it a sport with their WSOP coverage, so that's why I included it. Now that I think about it I should have included something like Bowling in the poll instead of Poker.

Ok. Well bowling isn't much more a sport than poker so it doesn't matter.

Nah I thought it was good you put Poker in there because some do consider it to be a sport. Although Bowling would have been another good choice for the poll(I consider that a sport haha).

As for my definition Im trying to write it out but when I do it just doesn't make sense. I really suck at writing but here it goes:

I define something to be a sport if the athlete has pretty much total control in what they are doing. Like for auto racing the driver has control over the car it will not go unless the driver makes it but in horse racing the horse can still run even without the jockey although it will probably be more successful with a jockey haha.

Although I will say my definition as I wrote it pretty much sucks because according to it I would consider something like Chess a sport when I feel it isnt like I said the way I feel makes sense in my head I just can't put it into words.

Tiernan, I thought about including soccer on the list, although I tend to not hear too many objections to soccer being called a sport. Also, since it's by far the most popular sport in the world, I didn't think it needed to be included. Although I guess we could include all sports on the poll. I have a feeling that none would dispute football, basketball, or hockey as a sport, but I would guess that baseball and soccer might have some opposition. I have a hard time thinking that anyone could come up with a definition of "sport" that could cover football, hockeye, basketball, and baseball, but exclude soccer. Tiernan, if you don't think that soccer is a sport then give me your definition of a sport to explain why soccer isn't one.

You can only put 10 items in a poll, so five "sports" was the most I could do. Some others I considered including are bowling, pool, tennis, swimming, and running.

If cheerleading isn't a sport, there's a school district in Ohio that owes me a shit ton of money for my daughter's (2) pay to play.

A sport requires a few things to qualify, one is athletic ability and some sort of physical skill. Bowling is a sport because it requires both. You must also have a winner and a loser determined by a score or figured out in the event (difference between running in a track event and some form of gymnstics)

This is dumb. You can be a fat piece of trash and still be a good bowler. Just because there is a final score it's considered a sport? (FYI...I have no opinion on whether it is or isn't). There's also a final score in Pictionary...is that a sport, too?

I understand the judging argument (don't agree with it) but gymnasts are among the best athletes in the world. I think it's disrespectful to ignore that.

I like this "final score = sport" definition. That means when I'm sitting on my ass playing video games for hours, I'm actually participating in sports! Guess I'm not out of shape and past my prime after all!!!
