We bought some furniture that will be delivered next week. It's fairly big (large desk, hutch, and lateral filing cabinet that they will carry upstairs). Is it customary that we'd tip them? If so, how much? We don't want to be jerks and stiff them, but we also don't want to tip if it isn't part of the process. Thanks.

If it's for a home based office, give a tip but have them sign a receipt so you can write it off your taxes.

It is for a home office, but I don't think it's probably tax deductible. I'll probably only work out of here a day a week (if that), so I don't think I can deduct it.

I gave them 20 to move my old couch to this other dudes apartment and they did it no problems.

My brother worked for a moving company. They were tipped about half the time. There aren't really any rules that I know of, though.

You either make someones day if tipping isn't customary and you do tip or you make them hate humanity even more if you don't tip and it's expected.

I tipped the guys that delivered our dishwasher, washer, and dryer...but it was also Memorial Day and I felt bad that they were out delivering stuff to my house that could have waited another day.

You can't go wrong tipping. Like I Wear Pants said...you make their day if they aren't expecting it...or you look like a douche if they are expecting it and you don't tip 'em.

You really want to make their day, but them each a six-pack of brew. Even if you buy the cheap stuff, its all good.

My garbage men will take ANYTHING and will not charge for extra bags if there is a 12 pack next to the trash every once in a while.

Why tip someone for a job I'm capable of doing myself?

I can deliver food.
I can drive a taxi.
I can and do cut my own hair.

I did however tip my urologist because I am unable to pulverize my own kidney stones

I would say if it's something crazy they are delivering, sure why not? Or if it's on a holiday or weekend.

But then again, I don't tip the pizza guy.

Why would I tip the delivery guy when they charge a delivery fee?? And he is doing his job, I don't get tipped for doing my job.

Is your job one that traditionally has tips included?

The delivery fee is for the gas and the wear and tear on the dude's car. Tip is for not being a soulless bastard.

The waitress is just doing her job, why tip her? Because in this country we've set many of the low wage earning positions up so that a tip isn't so much a tip but an automatic (though still voluntary) charge. This isn't how it works in many other countries. France for example you'd tip a waiter/waitress for exemplary service but it wouldn't be so brash to not tip someone who merely did their job.

if that is the case, do you tip everyone who provides you a service or helps you? do you tip the cashier at walmart, the worker at mcdonald's, and your bank teller for not being a soulless bastard too?

this is how it should be, a tip should never be expected or automatic.

okay...this is my story


the DirecTV needs to upgrade the dishes or we won't get our local channels.............
so, we finally call and say...yep we are ready for the new dish.
Unfortunately it is on Saturday when the US vs. England WC match is on.
They show up at 9:30.
They still cannot get the new dish to dial in at 2:30
I have got to see the WC game
Me and the kids go down to my folks to watch the biggest soccer match by the US WC team in 8 years.


the DirecTV guys finally figure out the satellite at 3:30
My wife tips them $20 a piece and two pieces of garlic bread.

the 2 Jacksons were one thing, but that was my garlic bread!

I'd say that when two guys are really struggling with something heavy at someone else's place, it'd be funny as hell to tip one of them over, because you know they'll both go down, giving you time to get away. If it's at your place with your stuff, going deliverer-tipping probably isn't a good idea.

I won't tip if a waitress/waiter is "just doing her/his job." If she/he is good and attentive and all that, then of course I will tip. But if I get a lazy, slow worthless waitress/waiter, hell no I won't tip. A tip is not guaranteed nor required. I will tip if I think it is earned; and I will say I am very generous when I tip.

I'd drop 'em $20 a piece. As far as tipping a waitress/server, I automatically give them a couple dollars. The way I look at it, at least they are out working and earning some of my money, unlike some worthless bastards.

I'd say it isn't the norm to, but if they do a good job, are friendly, or go out of there way to accommodate you then a small tip would be welcomed. I worked doing the opposite, taking things out of peoples' houses, and never expected a tip but always hoped there would be one at the end.

Thanks for the input. It looks like opinions are split. Because the furniture is pretty large, heavy, and must go upstairs, I'll set aside some money for a tip. Assuming they're decent, friendly, and competent, we'll tip.

I'd offer them something to drink, but not tip them unless they did something above and beyond actually dropping off your stuff. If they actually carry it up the steps and set it up, then a tip would be appropriate.

Man some people are pretty stingy w there cash. Not tipping waiters/pizza guys?? Is that $3-5 really gonna break the bank??
