Who has had these?? Had one in 2005, worst pain ever. Apparently the male version of childbirth, and if so, women can have the kids :) When they took the stent out, they put this oxygen mask like thing over your tool, then shoot water into your hole while they pull the stent out. Well, the nurse who was assisting was freaking HOT, slight problem.....

My brother had one and said it was horrible. I'm hoping never to get one.

Drink lots of water and stay away from foods with high levels/doses of oxalates.


I think only around 12% of men will develop kidney stones.

I've had about 11 or so. Definitely no fun at all. I was told at the hospital once that Northeast Ohio has the largest concentration of people who get them in the country. I haven't had any since moving away from Akron, for what it's worth.

Never had one thank God. I did have appendicitis though. They say its pretty similar to a kidney stone and almost as bad as labor pains... All I can tell you is that at the time my appendix ruptured, I wanted to rip someone or something apart all while emitting a blood-curdling war cry in hopes it would briefly relieve the agony I was in.

On a TRUE pain scale of 1-10, I consider a 10 so painful it will make me go so insane I will pass out. I would rate my appendicitis pain a very high 7 to mid 8.

...I've passed about 3 in my life time and the pain is horrible, so I hope you never get another one.

Had my first one a few months ago. Worst pain ever.......never passed it, had to go in and remove it....the catheter was very uncomfortable and it is weird seeing blood coming out that "hole".....

I've had them since high school, suffering through the 1st one is always tied in my mind to sitting on the couch and watching OJ in the bronco. I've probably had a dozen or so...I'm doing myself no favors with the diet. At this point I know what they feel like and I don't even go to the doctor, I just buy a few bottles of crangrape juice and gatorade and flush it out. Never had the stent or the sound waves thing to break it up, just pass them the old fashioned way.

I've been lucky enough not to get any. My best friend though has had them a few times and she says they're every bit as painful as childbirth.

They are recurring with me but fortunately, my doctor said that I was one of a very small percentage that could take a prescription (Urocit-K) to prevent their formation. I think he said like 5% of those who get them can take this prescription. Trust me, it's been a lifesaver.

First time I got them I thought I had been hit in the back with a baseball bat. They had to perform a surgery in which they knocked me out and put what I affectionately call "the jaws of life" right up through the old wheel house. This thing, from what I understand, was supposed to be able to grab onto the peanut M & M sized stone kinda like one of those crane games where you latch onto a stuffed animal.

The "fun" part was after where they made you drink and drink and drink so you could pass urine before you left for home. This is a tad gross but the urine was blood as thick as pea soup that was shooting in three different directions. Real fun part was the fact that after drinking all of that liquid I had to pee every 15 minutes and it felt like it was getting cut off every time I went.

PRAY you never get one of these of that magnitude.

Can't they now break them up internally with some sort of sonic waves so you don't have to pass them?

I was told it is because of the glaciers that left something in our drinking water.

Yea. My girls brother just had that done not very long ago. Poor guy has passed like 5 of them and he only drinks tea, water, or beer these days.

What kind of tea? My doc told me hot tea is fine but iced tea, for some reason, helps stones form.

To my knowledge its sun tea most all of the time. He does put honey in it most of the time though as well. Not sure if thats for flavoring or to help the stones.

I've had them several times over the years, and yes, they can be extremely painful! Drink lots of cranberry juice (at least a quart / day). Also, do not drink iced tea when eating any type of dairy products, like Wisconsin Cheese Soup. For some rease the two combine to form the stones.

Yeah there is this lady I work with and she has had 2 kidney stones, she said they both were worse than the 3 times she went through child birth.

I am amazed that something that small causes such great pain. Yes, I have experienced it, but thank God, only once.

most cases are caused by calcium oxalate (my brother's and my father in law's both were). that is caused by eating oxalic acid (through tea, rhubarb, and lots of other plants) and drinking lots of milk. according to wikipedia lowering your calcium intake is more effective to reduce the risk than anything.

My barber just passed one two weeks ago. I know because I called to make only to get the voicemail: "Sorry. I am not working today. I am passing a kidney stone."

I've heard from women that have both given birth to a child and passed a kidney stone that passin a stone is more painful.

The size of the tubes that connect your kidney to your bladder are about the size of angel-hair spaghetti... Add in a peanut m&m size stone as mentioned above and I'm sure some people trying to pass it would probably consider death as a better option at times.

Yes, sonofsam, that would explain a lot. I had to whiz through a coffee filter so I could catch it and when it came out, it was about the size of the head of a nail. Amazing that it caused all that pain. Also, it was jagged and sharp, a reason for the blood. There was only one good thing about my experience......Demerol!
