Still early. Last year was his first full season in the minors and he batted .275. This year he is sucking it up. Both years he has had trouble hitting on the road and this year he is hitting .263 at home and only .160 on the road. He's 20 so far from a bust but not the type of progression you like to see from a first rounder. With Beckham I think they drafted more on potential then immediate impact. The year before they had to pay David Price so maybe the signability of the #1 pick came into play but I don't know the financial details to tell you that was their motive.

Watching the draft I have a soft spot for Florida International baseball because I had a friend who worked in the athletic dept there and I visited and watched a bunch of games. Two guys they had committed coming from high school have been picked in the first round (#3 and 20 something). That has to hurt a program that is still up and coming that is looking for some impact players.

Not to mention the #3 overall pick in this years draft, Manny Machado, had committed to FIU.

Solid pick up for the Rays in Justin O'Connor. Best catcher in the draft since Bryce Harper was declared an outfielder haha... Even though the MLB draft isn't like others where players make immediate impacts it is nice to see a team going out and drafting where they are weakest (RF and C for Tampa).

Also I was scanning the front page, Pomeranz throws mid-90's? I admittingly haven't seen him throw but all the reports leading up to the draft I saw said he was low 90's and had a looping curve that was around 78-81. I assumed the Indians were going with another 1st rounder the likes of Sowers and Huff.

Surprising the Reds went catcher, even if he was a big talent, after Mesoraco has really taken major strides forward this year.

Reds took a catcher at #12, so I'm gonna assume he is better since he went before O'Connor

Surprised St. Ed's Stetson Allie hasn't been drafted. I know the appearance before the state title game he got knocked around a little bit but the guy is still 18 and throwing 100 and makes it look fairly effortless.

It's a crapshoot with high school players but Grandal has been a light hitting catcher up until this year where he basically came out of no where. His arm is solid but other defensive areas leave something to be desired. O'Connor projects well for average but is still raw power wise. Some say he has the best arm as a catcher in minor league baseball the day he laces up the cleats.

Both guys are good, plus this draft is such a guessing game anyways. This may be the only night these guys are ever discussed so in depth lol

I mean that's nice and all..but when there are 2 catchers taken before you, you are not the best catcher in the draft, at this point.

I know what you mean, I omitted high school in my discussion of best catcher. For some reason they don't list the Canadian kid from his JUCO school. But in this draft every one says Stetson Allie has the biggest arm and he's rated as the 15th best player overall and its now pick 39 and he's yet to be selected. Shit the Cubs picked a guy that wasn't even listed in the top 200 players. MLB draft rational is a mystery.

With Allie falling a little in the draft, maybe he'll end up going to school. He's a North Carolina commit, so I'd be happy to see him in Chapel Hill.

The curse of Pat Venditte.... The Rays just picked a kid who switch pitches (93 from right, 88 from left) but as an outfielder. Don't know anything about this guy, I was hoping for Allie.

Thom Brennamen and Chris Welsh were saying that they had a guy in the Reds front office telling them they really liked Alex Wimmers and were leaning towards drafting him. I told my dad after they said that, well we know who the Reds aren't drafting. haha

I don't pretend to know anything about college baseball but I heard that the guy the Reds got was supposedly going to be picked early by the Royals? That's a good thing, I'd imagine? right?

Grandal is from The U. Anyone thats a 2-3 year starter there is going to be a solid player. I wrote above he has a good arm but needs to work on the rest of his defense. Hit for little average till he hit over .400 this year but has always had good power.

Pirates have the second pick tomorrow. It would be great if they took Allie but they never would and then have to sign two stud pitchers.

not sure I like the Yankees first round pick... the scout reports that I've read have questioned his effort from play to play and game to game... that's something that's not tolerated in New York....
