Froyo 2.2 is out! Well, the hacked download for rooted users.
My Droid is now 5X faster than your little girly mahn's. That's not a typo - 5 times faster, and that's before the nerds really get a chance to start working it.
Plus, I now have flash, blue tooth voice dialing, and some other goodies.
Hopefully Motorola will push this out soon, but last time it was several months. I resisted rooting for a while. If you have any technical know-how at all, this is a no-brainer. Gets to a point where it's like a new PC, and the first thing any competent user does is format c: to get rid of all the crap. Face it, time to come over to the dark side!

That's the speculation. We shall see. I think this is the release that finally makes the Droid definitively superior to IPhone, if it's not already. I haven't actually gotten everything to fire up yet (like Hulu), but I've only had this a few hours. Flash and bluetooth dialing are major, major upgrades.
Also have the ability to put apps on the sd card now. Plus, not sure if it will be stock, but there is an app out (droidswap) that can help boost memory a bit by using like virtual ram from the sd card, like your computer does with the hard drive.
The only real major thing left to tweak, IMO, will be getting corporate mail to play nice. Stock apps don't combine gmail and corp in one inbox. Few aftermarkets do, but it's not easy to set-up on some. Lack of one inbox that's easy to set-up is a major drawback vs. Blackberry. There's also a similar issue with the calendar. And the interesting thing, there, despite Android being opensource, is the stock email modules are not open, which is why integration is such a tough thing. Has to be intentional on the part of google (just like Microsoft makes it so difficult to access exchange with non-MS products).
I've also been using Swype - it's AWESOME.
I imagine Froyo is going to be twice as fast as current for stock, maybe more. Battery life should be much improved I'm overclcocked to 1ghz. Speed tests say my Droid is now slightly faster than Nexxus on 2.2. No real issues with stability, other than my Sweeterhome app is pushed beyond the limits of ram (actually think this is a VM bitmap limitation). Heck, what should I expect for 14+ homescreens with 25 widgets? (I still get 10-12 hours of battery life with the screen always on, lowest setting).

There are YouTube videos and a lot over at Droidforums.net.
You need to do some reading, and I agree with the "hard route" so you understand what is going on. It's pretty simple now for me to flash new roms - takes maybe 20 minutes, and half that is just re-loading apps. This new version was trickier to reload apps, though, because Astro wouldn't do it like it normally does.
I'm guessing in a few days more polished hacks of this will be available. The hacked roms have been consistently better and ahead of the public releases (i.e., this is out now, will be much more polished in a week, and when public is out these guys will already have tweaked it to be better).
The overclocking kernels are major battery savers because they UNDERCLOCK when your phone is idle or not doing anything. So you get performance + battery, which IMO is the biggest reason to root.
I have to run, but will post you a link that will walk you thru. I've been rooted for awhile, and not sure what the process would be for you coming from 2.1

But Motorola wants to get it out ASAP to one-up the Incredible and the EVO.

Engadget, phandroid, and most of the geek sites have all said that the Moto droid will have Froyo within the week.
Also, a lot of the geeks over on those sites claim this jump to 2.2 is a much bigger jump than it was from 1.5 to 2.1.

OK, I knew it couldnt have been something like that.
I do have a question about the droid though..I download my music off of imusic straight to my phone. I have mostly rock and country. But im usually in the mood for one or the other, not a mix of both. I;ve played around in the music player to see if i can make seperate playlists, but couldnt figure it out? Is there a way to in the standard music player? Or is there an app I can download?

First things first: install Android Mate and Astro. Back-up all apps in BOTH programs. They are free, if you want to back-up everything exactly, then spring for Titanium backup, but more than likely you'll be changing stuff around with new options for Home apps. Read more on these links and do some research. The instructions are step-by-step and fairly straight forward, but the assumption is you've done some reading and educated yourself. The best docs still fail to make it perfectly clear for the clueless (speaking from experience).
----------------------------------------------------
Easier instructions - will give you Froyo and believe leaves you rooted, so very easy to swap out roms after (though you probably would need to nandroid restore to go back to a 2.1 rom)
http://www.mydroidworld.com/forums/motorola-droid/2513-non-rooted-users-guide-get-froyo.html
----------------------------------------------------
OK, to root from 2.1, try this: (yes, disclaimer, YOU "WILL" VOID WARRANTY AND COULD RUIN YOUR PHONE....YOU'VE BEEN WARNED).
http://forum.droidmod.org/index.php?PHPSESSID=55060ace771d02bf93a2ce3d3c8651d1&/topic,1004.0.html
Then, just my personal preference, install BuglessBeast v1.1 (34,000+ downloads = ridiculous)
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/bugless/47544-rom-bugless-beast-v1-1-a.html
Some issues you may have with your phone after:
1) dial *228 option #2 to update roaming
2) dial *22899 to re-aquire towers
3) if you haven't done so....Dial ##7764726. This is a "Secret" menu (not so secret). It wont dial anything, but instead its going to ask you for a password. Type "000000" (6- 0's) scroll down to "04 Vocode" -> then select "EVRC-B". go back to home screen then phone will reboot
4) update baseband (last resort, you may not need to do this - I haven't, yet, and it requires reactivating your phone *228 option #1) - different baseband for 2.2 and probably a good idea to update this.
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/woodyman/38607-update-baseband.html#post412535
I recommend playing with BuglessBeast1.1 before going to the 2.2 rom, which has some kinks that will probably be cleaned up over the next 2-4 days. With BuglessBeast, you can re-install all your apps easily with a batch install from Astro. That doesn't work with the Froyo rom and you will have to do one-at-a-time from Android Mate.
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/bugless/47544-rom-bugless-beast-v1-1-a.html
After a few days, you can go to 2.2. If anyone is interested, I'll post a link for a rom to do that (most likely I will go with Bugless when he comes out with it, my guess by no later than end of this week)
I'll try to help, but I haven't rooted from 2.1. Instructions are pretty good if you follow exactly, but there always seems to be something missing that is obvious common sense to only the techies. It took me probably 4 hours to read and understand and successfully root the first time. Once you've installed a rom, it's pretty easy to do a nandroid install or update.zip. I can't support you - I get all my tips and insights from the Droid forums.
I use SPRecovery. Many are using Clockwork now. Those seem to be the two routes to go to ultimately upgrade to Froyo.
You can wait a few weeks and VZW will probably roll out Froyo, but if the bugs in the hacked version are any indication I beleive it will be much longer. VZW doesn't take those sort of customer service risks, which is why 2.1 took so much longer. The process to unroot and go back to stock is not difficult. You may screw up your phone, but it can be fixed. The odds of ruining your phone are virtually nil - actually PERMANENTLY "bricking" the phone seems to be a bit of urban legend, but I don't pretend to be an expert.

Does Froyo increase the screen size, speed up the processor, magically add 4G, make the camera better, add a 2nd camera, and add an HDMI port? If so, I'm SOLD!

Yes...Overclocked kernels support it. I'm running the 1.0ghz kernel and wifi works just fine (I hit speedtests of 10megs/sec!). Only "glitch" is my wifi icon shows a weak signal when it is actually excellent.
WiFi was disabled in the initial release only to protect the source of the leak (which strikes me as kind of comical because I suspect they are using rooters as guinea pigs for final end-user testing).

Swype is pure magic. Unreal. Can't input as fast as with a normal sized physical keyboard, but I've noticed it is quite accurate even with very fast, somewhat sloppy tracing. Comparable to physically writing words. I had an issue originally with this and ignored it for a while. Talk about an app that, amazingly, actually far exceeds the hype!
