Yes, I know its a few years old. Yes, I know it was written by someone from the San Fransico area, But, it makes a lot of good points. I believe that everyone should have to work in a grocery store before they are allowed to shop at one.
I've never experienced anything on that list at a grocery store. Maybe every once in awhile run into someone who parked their cart in the middle of the aisle, but I just go around it.
But then again, I'm not dumb enough to go to the grocery store early on a sunday afternoon when theres a billion people there. If you do....you're just asking for it.

some of that stuff may be Cali specific...but i'll add my two cents, as I do a lot of the grocery stalking...as my wife doesn't get to the 'big city' much...
1. i have never in my life seen so many people that are too lazy to walk the extra ten feet to the 'cart corrall'.....no, i'll just leave it here...right next to where I parked so it will blow into that dude's new Honda Ridgeline........jerk!
2. i know you're 2 year old just learned to walk..but it is not so cute as to block the entire aisle whilst we watch her slo-motion toddler dance..."hey!...I got places to be, little baby!"
3. the time to ask about that produce, or the price on that item, is NOT while you are in line with 4 people behind you. dolt. there are people roaming the store that could have done that 15 minutes ago.
4. do I grab the food-buying-separator-KOOL-advertising little plastic divider at the conveyor....or do you.

i work in the meat dept. and ont thing that pushes me over the edge is when someone will pick out a steak or a pack of hamburger, then they'll decide that they dont want it and i find it with the chickeb or where the hot dogs and lunch are, or the one of the workers from the dairy will bring it down to me and tell me they found it in their case. So please people if you decide you dont want something thats fine, but please put it back where you found it.

The age old annoyance of getting behind someone who takes about three weeks to unload the cart, has four thousand coupons, and is planning on paying with a check that is more deliberately filled out than the folks who chiseled the original Rosetta Stone were. It makes you hope that someone left a cart next to her (it's always a woman) Honda Ridgeline and a gust of wind slammed the errant cart into her driver's side door doing extensive damage.(Right, killdeer?)

how about the woman that goes to the express line with a $150 in groceries then has it rung up in 3 separate purchases them pays with 3 different credit cards . none of which she has ready at that time.

I just shop at Giant Eagle and use the self checkout. There's never a line and I don't have to talk to the cashier.

I used to work stock at Krogers in high school. I hated when people would just leave random items they didn't want in random places. Hey, if you don't know where it goes give it to an employee, or keep it in your cart and hand it to the cashier. Don't frickin leave meat, or produce in the cereal isle.
Who do I make the check out to? WTF? How do you not know this?

If you've worked in any service industry, you know that a good 30% - 40% of the general population are complete morons.

This isn't about a grocery store, but I'm a server. Our menu tells you EXACTLY what we put on everything. So when I get the question of "what's on this?" I want to strangle people. Just read. Just read.

I was using the self checkout at meijer the other night. I noticed that they had furnace filters on sale so I had grabbed a "Anti allergen" filter out of the $9.99 "anti allergen" bin. I get to the self checkout and start to check out and it rings up $19.99. Well shit, someone put the wrong one back in the wrong bin. Oh well fuck it, I will just get the attendant to take it off. So I go stand at the little self checkout attendant booth and she is helping someone. So I stand there patiently, no biggie and after about 3 minutes of standing there waiting, I hear people's checkout machines going off for help. So she finishes helping the other lady, looks at me and goes "you are going to just have to wait a minute". At that point, i get pissed. I stepped right in front of her and said "no, I have been standing here waiting for 5 minutes, long before those other people's machines started going off, you are going to help me NOW". The bitch proceeded to roll her eyes at me and say "whatever" and proceeded to take the filter off my order.
Moral of the story, some grocery store workers are just as bad as the bad customers.

This guy went a little overboard. I worked in a grocery store and shared similar complaints, but I'd never be willing to type out a several page report on it and post it on the internet. To tell you the truth, I went from working in a grocery store to a hospital, and I'd love to go back in time and not have the stress. If your biggest problem is people leaving carts in the middle of the aisle, then it's time to start thanking the higher powers. Or get a better job.

My big problem is that I am crippled and have to use an electric cart when I go to a supermarket or hardware store. Trust me on this one-- stores are NOT designed for disabled people. The worst experience I had was in the local WalMart. The aisles are so goddamn narrow that it's nearly impossible to walk through them. And the people who shop there are savages. At any rate, I went to WalMart to buy a hair curler (not for me). As I was turning to get into the right aisle, some asshole jumped in front of me. I swerved to avoid him and crashed right into the huge display of curlers. I knocked the whole fucking thing over. There were hair curlers all over the place, and people couldn't walk around them. I couldn't even move the cart because a curler was stuck under one of the wheels. I just left the cart and the display where they were and got the hell out of there. I have never gone back to that store since.
Then last week I went to a large hardware. The carts there are really souped up. They are so fast that they are dangerous. I was trying to drive through a crowded aisle when I had to pass a shopping cart full of merchandise that had not yet been put on the shelves. The cart took me through there so fast that I couldn't control it and I latched onto a display of American flags. I knocked the flags all over the place. Then I drove through another aisle that had another shopping cart full of merchandise in the way. This time I knocked over a big display of turpentine. The employees got nasty with me. I got equally nasty with them. I threatened to contact the fire marshal because the aisles were so cluttered they weren't safe. I was very glad to get out of that store.
I haven't even mentioned the fact that most electric carts in supermarkets have dead batteries and won't move at all. I once went into a supermarket where there were six carts and all six batteries were dead.
If you want disabled customers to spend money at your store (and I spend a hell of a lot), you have to do something to make things easier for us.
