This is him as Sal Tessio in The Godfather in 1972.

I think he looks about 70 there, at least 60.

It's now 38 years later so 60 + 38 = 98.

89 would put him at 51 at that time. I don't think so. This should be investigated.

He looks sort of old for 51 but nothing insane.

I remember years ago a teaching colleague of mine and myself were attending a National Social Studies Convention in Manhattan and we had tickets to "Arsenic and Old Lace" which was playing in the old original Minsky's Theater on Broadway, and Abe Vigoda played on of the lead parts. This has got to be 35 years ago at least. I hadn't thought about Abe for years until this post reminded me of him. I always liked the guy. A really good character actor. Evidently, he is still among the living.

You know someone is old when their wikipedia lists a census as a source (the census is released to the public 72 years after it is taken)

He was a regular on Late Night with Conan O'Brien for many years, and appeared on the show's finale. So he's definitely still alive.

He lives in Daytona Beach and runs a small bakery now according to Wikipedia. This isn't true. I'm procrastinating.

I think his voice and mannerisms made him appear to be older than his stated age. Looking at his picture above he definitely looks to be in his 50's (although maybe late 50's not only 51).

Willi Cicci: The boss says he'll come in a separate car. He says for you two to go on ahead.
Tessio: Hell, he can't do that; that screws up all my arrangements.
Willi Cicci: Well, that's what he said.
Tom Hagen: I can't go with you either, Tessio.
Tessio: [to Hagen] Tell Mike it was only business, I always liked him.
Tom Hagen: He understands that.
Willi Cicci: [removing Tessio's gun] Excuse me, Sally.
Tessio: Can you get me off the hook, Tom? For old times' sake?
Tom Hagen: [shakes his head] Can't do it, Sally.
