I wish it was junior high still, then I wouldn't be writing this damn thesis right now!

I agree with the original poster that using it occasionally for emphasis or to make a point is fine, but using it for no reason when a less-offensive word would have made the point just as effectively isn't necessary.

This begs the question: What is worse: profanity or "comebacks" that are just utterly lame and horrible outside of the "Leave it to Beaver" world?hrspeedmerchant wrote:One can only hope you'll feel differently once you graduate from junior high school.ts1227 wrote:^^ No, this guy gets itHeretic wrote: I have a simple philosophy. who in the fuck made the word "fuck" or "shit" or any other taboo word, profanity? think about it, how is the word "fuck" any different that the word "park"? Webster(dictionary folks)? its just four letters put together. get a life dipshit.

Bob Knight disagrees with you, and he explains why:

You're kidding, right? If what you say is true then it should be acceptable to use profanity in any setting. Why not use it in church or at Thanksgiving Dinner with the whole family present?ZeroCool wrote: who in the fuck made the word "fuck" or "shit" or any other taboo word, profanity? think about it, how is the word "fuck" any different that the word "park"? Better yet, try it at a job interview.

I use it at family functions. "This food taste like shit" "What the fuck are you doing ____"
But thats besides the point, you completely missed what zerocool was trying to convey.

are you serious? people dont use it at church because organized religion folks are the ones who decided it. thanksgiving, another religious event regardless of what you are led to believe it is. laley is right, if somebody comes to me for an interview and says they dont condone profanity, guess what, potential lawsuit liability waiting to happen because most people do it. interviewee DOESNT get the job because i dont want sued because someone gets their panties in a bunch. is that the reason i tell them they dont get the job? fuck no it isnt. they just weren't what we were looking for. i think its more of a generational thing imo.

Yep, went to lunch, and murmured the food looked like ass. Interviewees laughed. One guy asked what I thought of his companies approach to the vertical integral within the media. I replied that I thought it was pretty shitty and thats why they needed me. Laughter again. Went to dinner/drinks later and well pretty much everyone got bombed and everyone was swearing. I got an offer 2 days later.
I suppose it couldve been actual credentials, resume, etc...but the cursing certainly didnt hurt anything.

everybody uses profanity at our work at some time and there is no way to stop it without firing everybody. if you hire somebody in that it offends, they could potentially claim among others, harassment(very easy), unsafe work place(not as easy but with the right lawyer could happen). harassment would be an open and close case.

Look, as I said originally, I agree that profanity can be used to make a point and to emphasize an opinion. My point in starting this thread is that it is overused here and on most other internet forums. Do you honestly disagree with this contention?ZeroCool wrote: are you serious? people dont use it at church because organized religion folks are the ones who decided it. thanksgiving, another religious event regardless of what you are led to believe it is. laley is right, if somebody comes to me for an interview and says they dont condone profanity, guess what, potential lawsuit liability waiting to happen because most people do it. interviewee DOESNT get the job because i dont want sued because someone gets their panties in a bunch. is that the reason i tell them they dont get the job? fuck no it isnt. they just weren't what we were looking for. i think its more of a generational thing imo.
However, don't try to tell me that is okay to swear in all social settings because we both know that just isn't true. You can probably think of as many expamples as I can.
One point we can agree on is that it undoubtedly is a generational thing. I'm over sixty, so I would guess we were indeed raised in different times.
BTW, Thanksgiving is in no way a religious holiday despite what you may have been told.

pilgrims introducing christianity to the native americans isnt religion? hmmmmmm.............
not in all social settings, no. you have to gauge your audience.
it is used on here about as much as it is in life.
peace out.

That isn't why thanksgiving was a religious holiday. It was because the day was used to give thanks to god.ZeroCool wrote: pilgrims introducing christianity to the native americans isnt religion? hmmmmmm.............
