The L.A. Times' Chris Dufresne predicts a heavy-handed blow, including scholarship losses and a bowl ban, pointing out that the cash-strewn Albert Means scandal at the turn of the decade cost Alabama 21 scholarships over three years and a two-year bowl ban, which cost the Tide a shot at the SEC title despite a 10-3 record in 2002.

Not sure where I saw it but someone speculated it being a strong penalty. 21 lost scholarships, 5 years probation and a 1 year bowl ban. For the lack of institutional control they showed when you include the basketball program, I would think that would be a slap on the wrist. A 1 year bowl ban? Give me a break.

Sounds like those will just be the sanctions on the football program. This investigation wasn't just about the football program. What about the basketball program?

Or maybe because there has been a clear lack of institutional control which thus far has gone unpunished.

The NCAA is being nicer and nicer with their punishments for major violations. They realized how much it cost SMU as a school when they were given the death penalty. Sports make too much money for school and that money benefits every student, from the star athlete to the valedictorian, to the C student paying his own way through school.

Look at the FSU situation. They had cheating going on across the entire athletic department involving almost every team on campus (if that doesn't show a lack of institutional control, then I don't know what is) and not only did they not receive the death penalty, but their penalty was relatively light considering how wide-spread the problem was.

Ohio State fans have no reason to want them to get a real heavy penalty other than the fact that they got beat twice by USC

Maybe it also has something to do with the fact that (at least in recent years) when Ohio State has broken the rules they have self-reported and self-imposed sanctions, unlike USC who seems to have tried to cover up all of their wrong doing.

Oh, no, I think the hammer should be laid down on Michigan too, and they've done anything but kick OSU's ass LOL

Fla grad? lol Now you're giving him too much credit. I doubt he even knows about USC's current situation.

As someone else said.....I'll believe it when I see it.

This. Not only were they allowed to cheat, they were allowed to all but flaunt it via ESPN because NOBODY in the media except Yahoo was willing to do the legwork and keep after it.

Otherwise, me might never have heard anything from ESPN at their pet coach and team.

No BCS school (at least good ones that draw well) will ever get more than this anymore.

I'd agree with a 4 year bowl ban, They need to make a statement, apparently the SMU fiasco hasn't taught anyone a lesson but SMU, who is finally beginning to turn the corner (only took them 20 years).

Yeah, all fans want to see the cheating losers punished. I hope they are punished if they did what they are accused of.

You're completely wrong about that. It was the NCAA that learned a valuable lesson when they gave SMU the death penalty. Sports bring students into the school and bring in a ton of money for the school, and that benefits everyone, not just the student athletes. The death penalty nearly ruined SMU (the whole school, not just the athletic program) and they are only now beginning to recover financially. That's why it has taken them 20 years to turn the corner. That is why we'll never see another school get the death penalty. Long post season bans can have a similar crippling financial effect on the whole university. The NCAA wants to send a message to schools that break the rules, but they also don't want to bankrupt them.

Thats a fair statement

I don't think a one year bowl ban is enough to deter future universities from making the same mistakes. There needs to be a better way to hold these people accountable, I'm just not sure how though.

Stupido, every knowledgeable non-USC fan in the country is in favor of the guilty being justly punished.

Any punishment that USC receives isn't going to scare anyone but USC because everyone else that chooses to break the rules will still think they will be smarter than USC and will get away with it.
