I realize Ghana had the chance to score the goal, but that ball was in the net if it wasn't for a cowardly act.

I am not gonna lie, i would have done the same thing if i was in that position. Its like taking the pass interference call (with no chance of making a defensive play of course) if you are defending a wr who is about to make the game winning catch.

It really is not much different than when players foul in the box or on break-away etc.
Yes it is. You can still miss or the keeper makes a save. That ball was in the net and he just punched it away. Its a joke.

He didn't disrespect the game... anyone who plays soccer would realize that's what he had to do. You don't just let the ball go by you if you know it means you're going to lose in the world cup. It's the equivalent of meaning to foul in basketball, throwing a hail mary in football or intentionally causing defensive pass interference.

You don't let the other team win if there is something you can do to possibly extend it.

It can be compared to so many other things... goal tending in basketball or fouling intentionally. It could be like pass interference in football. All you are doing is breaking the rules of the game to hopefully have another shot to stop them again when you're already beat.

I was thinking the same thing. All close basketball games that are extremely close involve the team slightly behind deliberately fouling to save time and force the team to take foul shots (which they may miss).

Instead of playing defense and trying for a steal they force a "penalty" (foul) shot and get the ball back after it.

Unfortunately, it is abusing the system, but still, when put in that situation, I betcha it wasn't just an act to win but probably a reflexive act. Still, in many sports, people abuse the rules for a chance to win. One such instance includes intentionally fouling at the end of a basketball game to lengthen the game and have a shot of winning, that's abusing the system as well because technically, those should be intentional fouls.

Thats the only difference though. Cheating isnt the right word. He broke the rules/guidelines within the sport. He was called for it. The correct punishment for his team was given for what the offense was. Ghana blew it.

If you tackle someone on a break-away outside the box it is even worse imo. World class players dont miss break aways often. But in that case you dont even give the PK. He did exactly what he needed to do to help his team win.

FIFA could also suspend Suarez for the final/3rd place game since he was shown a straight red.

He did what anyone would do in that situation when you are playing 120 minutes for the WC.
His sole purpose when he steps in for the keeper in that situation is to prevent that ball from crossing the goal line.
The red card was appropriately awarded for that infraction, and he will miss a match.
Ghana needed to convert on the PK, as simple as that.
Suarez is just incredibly lucky they didn't.
He went from goat (with a small g) to hero in Uruguay in one moment.

You missed 3 or 4 at least. South Korea had 2, and Japan had at least 1.

Just watched the games on my DVR. What a finish to the Uruguay - Ghana match. The Mensah PK was possibly the worst effort I've ever seen. I don't think any keeper would have failed to save that.

The Netherlands should have no problems with Uruguay IMO. Great matches today.

Japan had two on freekicks in one game alone and they were both amazing. Right now the best goals are Maicon for Brazil, the Japan Free Kicks, Teves from argentinas, and my homer pick Donovans what does everyone else think?

My top goals are:
Higuain header (the passes by Messi and Aguero were awesome)
David Villa from 50 yards and his falling down one.
Carlos Tevez screamer
Michael Bradley/Landon Donovan (Donovan was awesome so its here, but Bradleys was actually difficult, and had almost as much meaning)
Luis Fabiano

Probably my top 5 right now. The good goals have certainly come later in the tourney. I cant put Maicon up there, cause im 99% sure it was a cross lol.

I like Tevez's bomb and Villa's one in the top right when he was falling down. He made those defenders look like chumps.

Argentina has had some of the worst touches of the ball this half. Di Maria and Higuain in particular.

The rout is on, 3-0

Germany is getting right in there, those last 2 goals were from point blank range.

Schweinsteiger with the great set up to Friedrich.

Germany has been the most impressive team of this tourney so far, IMO.

Very strong and very fast.

This World Cup has shown how teams that run into a certain style can be beat, even when they look insanely good heading into the match. Germany struggled mightily (granted a man down) versus the ueber defensive tactics of Serbia. But versus the teams that have opened up on attack, they have shredded. Itll be interesting to see if they can counter as well versus Spain the way they have everyone else. Spain wont lose possession as much, but when they do they are susceptible to the counter.

Netherlands have been the best team in the tourney for me so far though. Germany is second by default now, because they are still alive though Uruguay has looked really solid as well.

What a shit stomping by Germany, I knew they were good but that was insane. Maradona is probably drowning his sorrows in "Tony Montana" sized pile of cocaine right now.

All this talk about South American teams dominating this WC and it looks like three of the four semifinalist will be from Europe. I have to pull for the Dutch at this point. I don't care if Germany wins it all but not Spain.

But at the same time, South America has 5 teams, and they all did very well for themselves with 3 over-achieving, 1 on target, and 1 underachieving.

Europe has like 13 spots. Odds are just more in their favor.

I really hope Spain can win it all now.
