Anyone else think soccer needs another referee on the field? You have one guy running among 20 players, and two other officials on the side lines who have terrible views of the action. They can't possibly see everything and get the calls correct.

Holy shit someone needs to tell Martin Tyler and Efan Ekoku the damn rules of soccer. The offside rule states the SECOND TO LAST DEFENDER. The keeper clearly came up past Vela and the glancing header turned into a pass. The keeper was no longer the last defender he was the second to last defender and the man on the post was the last. Vela was only behind ONE of them, thus offside. Terrific call from the linesman, simply terrific. Not many linesmen would notice something like that.

Now, someone please tell ESPN so they stop bitching about the bad call because it was the correct one and SA wouldve been screwed if they allowed the goal.

I'm using ESPN3.com. Someone at my office let me in w/ their comcast.net ID.

Exactly. Thank you. I was screaming at them for that, and I was just going to post that. The guy ESPN has commentating it on my phone knew the rule, so that was good, but I was dumbfounded about the idiocy of them.

As a goalkeeper in games that don't mean much, but they still call offsides, I used that rule to my advantage. Very few people know it's the second to last defender, so it's always fun. :)

Yeah, im shocked Martin Tyler didnt know the rule...although he was kind of mum on the issue. I think he didnt want to upstage Ekoku with an on air correction. He was kind of light-hearted in his disagreement with the call.

As for Ekoku, I shouldnt be so hard. He is a former player and often they dont actually know the rules. ESPN brought him in, and he is actually doing a great job as the color commentator but he clearly didnt know that rule as most player wouldnt.

Yah, don't get me wrong, I'm absolutely thrilled that ESPN has brought in some of these announcers to call these games. I love having a English/Scottish/Irish accent calling my soccer games, it makes it feel authentic, it was just a bit strange to hear neither of them actually acknowledge the actual rule. Other than that, I'm enjoying them pretty much.

South Africa started out rusty, but they're doing much better now. Sometimes though, they make bad passes at their end of the pitch, which could have been devastating early on. They need to just clear it, rather than giving the ball right back to Mexico near the goal. On the other hand, Mexico has given South Africa a ton of space, and if South Africa makes better passes, swings it more, and uses the whole pitch, they could score one or more in this half.

SA would have been burned by Anelka or Forlan with their bad passes out of the back. Luckily Mexico is leaded with talent on the wings, but no true forward to punish those bad passes.

And Im with you on the announcers. Martin Tyler is the best in the business. I feel as though I am playing FIFA 10 right now!

What an absolutely beautiful counter-attack. There was no stopping of that by the Mexican goalkeeper. Let's see how they play with the lead since that'll be a huge confidence booster in front of their home crowd.

It wont even be top 15 for the WC, it was just that it was a breakaway from the side (so bad angle) and the dude said, "Fuck it, im hitting this bitch as hard as I can" and just roped it upper 90 from like 12 yards away.
