Just looking for opinions, what do you guys think of it?

I'm currently working for a non-profit library organization in Dublin, in the research department, which includes many of the leaders in the library/information field at the moment.

We recently took a tour of the building, and we had mixed opinions, aside from the obvious fact that it is a beautful building. Concerned with how well it would function as a "space" for students and faculty to work and the like.

What is the functionality like? Easy to use, adequate places to study, computer terminals, etc? What seems to be the general consensus on campus?

Okay, I'll give you a fair assessment, it's a beautiful library, but they need more space for students to be able to study. It's packed to the maximum at all times, and you can rarely find a table to study with your friends or just by yourself. The computer terminals are enough to satisfy the demand since most students have a laptop and can use the WiFi anywhere in the library(with the exception of a few floors but I think they might have got that fixed now). It's a sweet library, but its too popular and I don't really like going there when I need to study.

Fair enough. Thanks! Heard the same thing from others, actually. Seemed to sacrifice function for architectural beauty, in some regards.

Where do you go when you need to study? Another library? Does the new union have lots of study/work space?

Fill me in: did they just refurbish the old library that sits at the head of the Oval, or did they build a brand new one (I am out of the loop)?

Sleepers description is what I get from a lot of my friends that attend OSU as well. Its always too crowded.

They kinda did both, refurbished the old one and also built a huge addition. Really impressive architectural achivement, IMO.

I agree that it is often crowded, but you can usually find somewhere to sit. The building is beautiful and the grand reading room is a great place to study. The 11th floor provides one of the best views in Columbus. The group study rooms are amazing and have been incredibly helpful to myself this year. The cafe is pretty nice and when there's a line it usually moves quickly. All in all I'd say that it's a great library that I study at all of the time.

The 11th floor IS really neat, but I must echo the "it's always crowded" statements.

It can be challenging to find a place to study, and most of the chairs simply aren't comfortable.

As stated before, the top floor might be the best seat in Columbus. The view from up there on a fall night, maybe a football Saturday would be enough to make my dick hard. Of course, the chances of me being in the library on a Saturday night are < 0%.

As far as studying goes, I still prefer the SEL.

Yeah it's too crowded. I only went once last quarter and had to find a random seat on the 7th floor tower, it was garbage. It's much easier for me to study in my room.

its really cool, but i dont go to the library to look out a fucking window. there are rarely seats available and god forbid a computer be available.

My favorite place to study was Sullivant Library. Nice atmosphere, almost always a place, great computer lab. For some reason they decided to close it when the new library opened which has led to the new library being more crowded. Another gripe with the library is its hours. Only open until midnight other than finals week (open til 2).

Its crowded but I can usually find a seat. I dont understand why they rent out the glass room in the back of the building. Last quarter they had a glee club performing at one of the events. I would like to meet the person who thought that was a good idea.

Study at tOSU? LOL! Everyone knows all Buckeyes are geniuses and will have great jobs bossing around SEC grads even without studying!

I appreciate your humor, though, in mentioning this. Because so many MAC grads are on this site, it's important to keep things a little hush-hush about Big 10 dominance.

Yea, i was sorta shocked as well when i heard they were renting it out. Also heard that you can rent out the 11th floor for events.

I go to the Science and Engineering library when I need to study, and I've never been to the Union ever, so I have no idea if it'd be suited for study.

It definitely sacrificed function because it looks nice, and as far as aesthetics its probably one of the best in the world.

And seriously, I'm surprised most other schools even have libraries, why study when you are going to work at a restaurant anyway?

I agree that there are no places to study. I prefer SEL but even that gets too packed some times.

Haha, this is sorta discouraging, frustrating that a new library doesn't seem to be adequately serving the needs of the students in regards to study space. I wonder what kind of input they took from the student-body while in the design phase.
