Couple things (2 of the 3 came from the comments section of that article)..

1-first degree murder for alcohol overdose? (im not too familiar with that law, is that the norm?)

2-What's up with lacrosse players and these crazy stories?

3-There's a town called Chevy Chase?

The name "Chevy Chase" was taken from one of the absorbed plots of land. Its name in turn, according to the Village of Chevy Chase's official history, can be traced to the larger tract of land called "Cheivy Chace" that was patented to Colonel Joseph Belt from Lord Baltimore on July 10, 1725. It has historic associations to a 1388 battle between Lord Percy of England and Earl Douglas of Scotland. At issue in this "chevauchée" (a French word describing a border raid) were hunting grounds or a "chace" in the Cheviot Hills of Northumberland and Otterburn.[2]

From wiki, I always thought Chevy Chase was the actors stage name taken from the city in Maryland but another wiki search says Chevy was a nickname from his Grandma and Chase really is his last name...who knew

But as far as the article is concerned...its amazing how fucked up the judicial system is. A 22 year old overdoses on alcohol and her boyfriend is arrested. Awesome.

it'll be interesting to hear the details--they're both adults,so short of forcing her to drink by way of threat or intimidation,I don't see how he can be charged with murder in the first degree.

Interesting that he's been "charged" and isn't just being investigated. There must be more to this story.

The local reports is that there was physical trauma to the girl's body, and the guy had a relationship with her. The first degree charge does seem a bit odd, I'm not positive about the requirements in Virginia but it typically takes some sort of pre-meditation, a drunken fight wouldn't seem to rise to that, as if it really matters if the girl is dead.

BTW, people haven't heard of Chevy Chase?, it is probably the biggest Maryland suburb of DC, along with Bethesda and Silver Spring.

Police were called to an off-campus apartment around 2:15 a.m. Monday about a possible alcohol overdose. Officials have not determined the cause of death but say there were signs of physical trauma.
I'm guessing that is where the murder charge is coming from, but I agree given what the article says, that seems a bit much given the situation. I am curious to see how this shakes out.

As for the OP question. I'm not sure what it's like in the rest of the country, but on the East coast, most college lacrosse players come from very wealthy families and have an unwarranted sense of entitlement that makes them think they can get away with anything. Not saying that's the case here though.

No matter what though sad turn of events. I feel for both of those students' families ...

You do realize the Duke rape case was a hoax right? That story wouldn't have got past the 2nd day if journalists had their heads on their shoulders and an idiotic prosecutor wasn't trying to buy the black vote with a fraudulent prosecution. That story stunk from day 1. At least in this case a woman is actually dead.

its just unfortunate for lacrosse. although it is the fastest growing sport in america, not enough of the "good lacrosse things" are presented in the media. its only the "bad lacrosse things" that get attention. think about it, we hear stories all the time about football players killing, using drugs, getting arrested for weapons, yet we dont say necessarily assume all football players are rapists/murderers. A lot of the bad things in football (or other sports) are kind of drowned out to a point by all the good things that players do and those things are expressed by the media, but they arent for lacrosse, thus all you hear are the negative things, which does, unfortunately put lacrosse in the negative spotlight.

How much truth is there to that statement? I feel like lacrosse is no where near the fastest growing sport.

There are more than 500 college club programs, including nearly 200 women's teams that compete at the US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates level."

Soccer is probably the fastest growing sport in America overall with popularity.

But there has to be a lot more to this story than what we are reading. They just don't throw around 1st degree murder CHARGES without more evidence.

to get into Denison to play lacrosse, do you have to rape, murder, or rob someone?

but this is a pretty sad situation(obvii) and I, too, am curious about the 1st degree murder charge.

popularity and participation are not the same, and lacrosse IS the fastest growing sport participation wise at the high school and college level

Well that make sense because it was one of the few sports that weren't already school sponsored sports. So I think that is kind of a no brainer.

It definitely doesn't say that it's the fastest growing sport in America.

There's been one false rape accusation and one murder in the past decade for Lacrosse. I'd say that's a good track record actually. Ben Roethlisberger does more than that in one weekend.

The majority of drunken females on college campuses have someone who wants to strangle them. Its just unfortunate this guy apparently snapped and didn't have someone to talk him down.
