Any list with Slash on it should be burned. Top 20....maybe. Top 10? Not in this lifetime.

namod65 wrote: Is that your list or did you find it somewhere? Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and Buckethead should probably all be on there and ahead of Slash. In fact Buckethead is probably number one. What he can do with his "jazz pinky" is ridiculous. Slash is great and is pretty remarkable considering he never took lessons and taught himself. Maybe if he took lessons he would be up there with Satch and Buckethead :D

Also Kirk Hammett and Dave Mustaine could be on the list but should be honorable mention. Gotta give some love to the metal genre.

Here is my version:

1. Buckethead
2. Joe Satriani
3. Van Halen
4. Hendrix
5. Steve Vai
6. Kirk Hammett
7. Slash
8. Jimmy Paige
9. Clapton
10. Zakk Wylde

Honorable Mention:

Dave Mustaine
Randy Rhodes
Stevie Ray Vaughn
I like a lot of the guys on your list. Buckethead is top ten IMO, but not #1. He can do some crazy shit, but not nearly as technically sound as Vai or Satch. He was a student of Paul Gilbert (Buckethead's real name is Brian Carrol and he was a student of Gilbert).

There are so many great players anyone's list is just personal preference. My list is this in no order except Satch at #1:

1. Joe Satriani
2. Stevie Ray Vaughan
3. Steve Vai (Student of Satriani)
4. John Petrucci (of Dream Theater, one of the most technically sound bands ever IMO)
5. Paul Gilbert
6. David Gilmour
7. Jimi Hendrix
8. Vinnie Moore
9. Eric Clapton
10. Eric Johnson

HM:

Yngwie Malmsteen
Kirk Hammet (Student of Satriani)
Jeff Beck
Zak Wylde
Randy Rhoads

All of these lists are shit without Django Reinhardt.

Seriously, if the list doesn't include Django it isn't a list of the greatest guitarists.

By the way, the dude only had two working fingers on his fret hand.

I suppose I could say a list with a guitarist with 2 working fingers on his fret hand is a shit list. It's all preference.

Hendrix idolized the dude. That's good enough for me.

I won't rehash all of the people who have already been mentioned but the best I have ever seen live is Leroy Powell (back when he was still with Shooter Jennings' band).

I have Knopfler in my top ten. What he did in Dire Straits and later on with Eric Clapton was amazing. His solo(s) in Sultains of Swing speaks for itself. I was going to go back and put May as like an honorable mention on my list but I was too lazy.

Yeah, Knopfler is sweet. He is probably my second favorite guitarist behind Powell.

Absolute horseshit. The solo in November Rain is an all-time great. He has a style that rhythmically moves from note to note better than most guitarists. Any list without Slash on it should be burned in my opinion.

There's a reason the new lineup of GNR needs multiple guitarists (including buckethead at one time) to be able to play some of the parts Slash plays by himself. I may be in the minority but he's in my top 5.
