I'm not a beer snob. I generally go for Coors light.

I'm only a snob when it comes to wine. Now THERE are some rules that should not be broken.
Ever. For example:
Pink wine (white zin) = for people who don't know wine.

Wine should be quality unless it comes in a box. Then it just has to be fun.

I am one of those who are somewhat intimidated by wino's... lol .That is my affectionate term for wine snobs. I have never gotten into wine. I really do not like drinks that are not cold. I do not drink coffee, hot chocolate, hot tea, etc. So when I do drink wine, I like something cold and sweet, which as you know leads to wine snob's recognizing and laughing at my pathetic existence... LOL

I had some merlot with friends at dinner the other night... meh, I got rocked, but I would have preferred a cold beer (which I had as a chaser.) So what do you rec. a novice trying... to expand their wine taste and appreciation. I am willing to learn. I like all the berry wines, mixed fruits, etc.

If you prefer the sweeter wines but don't want the pink drink of shame, you can always try something like a moscato leggero (Gloria Ferrar) The trouble is, that most whites taste better when chilled.
Also I would recommend reislings and gewurztraminer (say gavertztrameener). The reisling I would chill but the gewurtztraminer can be drank at room temperature.
There are some sweeter reds out there, they need chilled also, however most reds are awful chilled. There are a variety of ports, shiraz and some chianti's out there that have a sweeter flavor that are best room temp.

The great thing about wines is that you don't have to spend alot of money (popular misconception) to enjoy them. Most varieties of wines, including the ones I listed above, can be found in the common grocery store. These are great for beginners. And if you find something that keeps you interested enough, then you can start experimenting with different labels.
For the record, some of the best wines I've ever had were under $10. In fact, most of the better wines you can get at under $40 (and that's for special occasions).
The people who have more money than brains are the ones that will spend over $40, unless they are label collectors or investing to make a profit later.

If you really want to try and expand on different flavors, there are many wine clubs that will send you a different wine(s) each month to try at a reasonable cost also. I actually belong to one and have never been disappointed, even when I didn't care for a particular taste. It also helps that I still have friends in Ca. who send me bottles from time to time.

Kendall-Jackson Chardonnay with an italian meal is total bliss. Downside is, I've noticed quite a bit of taste difference since they switched from real cork to a rubber cork.

But, I am a huge fan of a mild Reisling. I'll drink it to death. I swear that stuff goes well with anything.

That's because you (and the majority of the public) are ignorant when it comes to beer. The only beers you know are Bud, Miller/Coors, and the 'premium' beers like Blue Moon, Corona, Heineken etc. I would feel the same way as you if all I drank were shitty beers made with adjuncts like corn and rice and extracts as opposed to using roasted barley and real ingredients.

Feel free to call me a liar, but beer is by far my favorite drink. I've invested a lot of money in the beers I drink because I enjoy trying new stuff, and some of the stuff I buy is pretty expensive. Two weeks ago I paid $22 for a 4 pack of beer, I would never do that for any other drink.

What in the hell was 22 for a 4 pack? I hit the Andersons and Grapes of Mirth for specialty beers but I haven't seem something like that. Thanks your fellow beer snob.

Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout. It was worth every penny.

Give me a strong IPA on a summer day, and I'm happy. Dogfish Head 120 minute, Harpoon Imperial IPA, Racer 5 ... all delicious. That's not to say I don't drink my fair share of "cheap" beer ... I downed a few 12-packs of Bud Light during the hockey games this weekend. But to dismiss the "better" beers is to miss out on a great joy in life :)

I love the IPA's but Racer 5 is NASTY

Think I drank the Hop Rod one and it wasn't for me. Next time I see some different types from Racer I may give them a chance.

Yeah, Hop Rod Rye is a different type of beer from that brewery (Bear Republic). Not my favorite of theirs. The only other one they distribute widely is the aforementioned Racer 5.

Hop Rod is actually my favorite beer from BR. Racer 5 is good as well, but they distribute others, Racer X DIPA, Red Rocket Ale, and Big Bear Black Stout.
