Looks like ol' Roy's rapid aging syndrome from this past season was well warranted ... and it continues in Chapel Hill. The program may be on the clock.




... Annoying, isn't it, UNC posters, the whole "your program must be falling apart" talk? (This isn't an indictment of you guys, but rather one of the college basketball community at large.)

While this doesn't spell greatness for next season -- gorocks is right, these two transfers put UNC even further behind in its frontcourt development -- it isn't the end of the world. The Heels are mighty fortunate, however, that Harrison Barnes decided to attend college in Chapel Hill. Or next season might have been a 2002 repeat..

How quickly things change. :)

1. I hate when guys transfer out of UNC, even if it is the last guy on the bench.

2. This will hurt Carolina in '10-'11. Zero frontcourt depth now, and the two guys we have need to put on some major lbs (I have a few I would gladly give them).

3. In the long run, Roy probably replaces two role players with two studs in the '11 class. Carolina was not a real threat to win a title next year anyway, so down the line it will probably be a net gain for UNC in a pure basketball sense. I still don't like it.

Tough break for Roy and it never helps when a program is in the news because a player(s) is transferring.

They are probably heading to UCLA. Plenty of schollys open there.

At the beginning of this year I remember thinking Roy probably wished he had those two scholarships available. Now with the departure of Davis, prone to injured nature of Zeller, and the questionable development of Henson I think I was wrong.

I don't think either of the Wear twins were going to put this team over the top, but they certainly weren't going to keep them from winning.

Could Austin Rivers be on the way?

Wow, UNC with only two experienced guys taller than 6'4 if the Wear twins transfer, did I read that right? Ouch.

I know Harrison Barnes isn't experienced, but he is a special player.

Not sure yet about Reggie Bullock, but I would envision him being pretty solid as well.

I had been hearing these rumors for a few weeks, but supposedly the Wears themselves had been saying that there was no truth to it. Guess that wasn't the case at all. So much for Drew II, McDonald, and Watts being the ones who would leave.

RiverRat13's first post says it all. This might hurt in the short term, but it could be very beneficial in the long term. Good luck to the Wears on the west coast, I suppose.

PG - Drew II/Marshall
SG - Strickland/Bullock/McDonald
SF - Barnes/Graves/Watts
PF - Henson
C - Zeller

That will be the rotation for next season unless Roy goes out and gets another player for 2010. Obviously you'll probably see a lot of smaller lineups with Barnes and Graves playing at the 4, I would think. There is now plenty of room for McAdoo and Hairston in 2011, plus that one scholarship that Roy could use for this coming season, or bank to add to the 2011 class. By 2012, Henson will probably be gone, along with Zeller, Drew II, Watts, and maybe even Barnes or Bullock. Carolina's 2012 class, if they are able to land all their major targets (and they will have room to do that), might be something very special.

A few recent comments from Rivers:

“I want to go to a school where I can fit in and play well,” Rivers told Rivals’ Jerry Meyer. “Duke and North Carolina run a similar offense and like to get up and down the court. Florida runs some too, but their offense is different. They like to slow it down and make more passes. That’s fine, but that’s really not me.”

“I also want to work on my defense and become a better all-around player. I like how Duke picks up their man full court, and Duke does a great job developing their players. Duke is the lead school for me right now.”

Meh, good riddance to the Wear twins.. If their heart isn't in Chapel Hill, I don't want them there.

We'll be seeing some small lineups in UNC this season, which isn't a bad thing in the college game, especially with the way UNC runs on offense.

Lot of rumbling about Kadeem Jack. If Roy is able to land a top 50 player this late in the game without any previous contact, it would be amazing.

I think Rivers will be a Dukie, but I was almost certain Barnes would be one as well. But I don't see lightning striking twice.

Kadeem Jack sounds like a pretty good player. He's still a little thin at about 210 lbs, I think, but he would definitely help out in the post. If Roy can get him, I'll be happy since he should provide some defense, shot blocking, and rebounding off the bench. That would take up 11 scholarships for 2010. Once Graves graduates after next season, there will be three open scholarships for 2011 if no one leaves early. McAdoo and Hairston already have two of those, so Roy could add another player in 2011, and maybe even more if Henson and Barnes head to the NBA. Whatever happens, 2011 and/or 2012 have the potential to be monster classes for Carolina. If Barnes and Henson stick around after next year, I would think Carolina will once again be a legitimate title contender, maybe even if only one of them stays.

I'm surprised kids don't transfer more often. Potential star or not......it's hard for many kids to be so far from home.

LOL. Nah, I'll save that for when Duke repeats. Then I'll have to change my "5>4" to "130>99".

Nice counter with the "Defending Champs > NIT" though. Very well played.

I don't think the Wears leaving will have an effect on Rivers' decision.

I do think Austin will be playing basketball just off the 15-501, but it won't be at North Carolina.

So I've been looking around the last couple days, but I haven't been able to find anything concrete about exactly why the Wears are leaving. Their dad said something about "geographic issues" in an interview, which I assume means that the twins were homesick and/or the family wasn't able to travel to enough of their games. I can understand that, I suppose.

I've also heard that David's hip injury was going to cause him to sit out next season, which would lead to he and Travis being in different years of eligibility. By both of them sitting out a year, they'll remain in the same class. I suppose it would be easier for David to recover and rehab closer to home, and if they're really not happy at Carolina, this plan would seem to make sense if they desperately wanted to remain in the same year of eligibility.

Anyway, I'm still just a little confused. If healthy, both Wears were going to see plenty of playing time this coming year. They have said that they really love Carolina and Chapel Hill, but maybe those were things that they just said. They had met with Roy after the season to discuss off-season plans and gave every indication that they would be returning, then out of the blue, their dad calls and says they're leaving? Something just doesn't seem right. Has anyone heard any other type of explanation for why this happened?

My problem with the Wears is that they weren't men enough to tell Roy themselves they were leaving. Had to have daddy do it for them. Homesick is a legit issue, but man up instead of daddy making the call for you.

Yeah, that's pretty shady. I'm also not too happy that they waited so long to make the final decision. There probably would have been a few more uncommitted players that Roy could have gone after if he had known this earlier. It seems as though the Wears waited until classes and exams were over to make the announcement so they wouldn't have to take any heat because of their decision. I can understand that to a point, but it also leaves the program in a bind.
