Perhaps it was a poor choice of words to use the word "opinion." That is just a question of semantics. A person can be of the opinion that height is a determiner of intelligence, or of the opinion that one race is superior to another, or the opinion that women should be submissive to and are inferior to men. These are all opinions that someone COULD hold, but they are all rooted in ignorance and should have no place in any society I want to live in. Perhaps I should have said that he may HOLD any foolish opinion he likes, but I pray that he never has the power to either influence others to feel the same way, or to inspire action on that behalf.

OK, so clearly you're saying there's a sexual component to a male touching a female in certain ways even in a wrestling context. My question is, why is it not OK for a boy to touch a girl that way, but it's is OK for a boy to touch another boy that way? If there's a sexual component to what goes on while wrestling, isn't it there regardless of the gender of the participants? So, you're one of those people who say how "gay" wrestling is? You know, two guys in tights rolling around with eachother? You can't have it both ways, either it's sexual or it isn't?

For the record, regardless of who I'm wrestling, I've never considered anything that goes on while wrestling sexual, clearly CoachB63 disagrees.

Guys cant play on girls volleyball teams because Ohio has guys volleyball...or at least if it isnt sanctioned there are many schools with teams.

I really am still shocked that Ohio hasnt started girls wrestling. We are so proud to be a wrestling state but have totally dropped the ball on stepping to the front for this. I would love to see it develop in the next 5 years.

i agree i think most schools could support a girls team, escpecially if there were only 10 weight classes

Texas allows boys and girls practice to run together and then has separate events for girls. The first couple years it was only tournaments, no duals. Lots of teams to fill weights...now their numbers of girl's teams rival the boy's squads. It is huge.

Texas started it as an old boys law, designated to stop girls form wrestling guys. The association admitted they didn't expect it to take off, but it has florished in 6 or 7 years.

I don't mind coaching girls, and I've coached twelve in the last ten years, but separating boys and girls is ideal for a bunch of reasons. OHSAA moves at a glacial speed, so don't hold your breath.

When listening to the opponents of females wrestling together with boys I don't know how the concerns are eradicated by allowing them to practice together yet forcing them to compete separate.

Agree with Bitter. I never get the argument that there is something sexual/potentially "arousing" in boys wrestling girls, but that same argument doesn't come up with boys wrestling boys. Is it OK to have your face in another boys face/crotch or grabbing their waist/thighs/chest, or is there some sexual component to it? Do you think males have sexual thoughts EVERY time they touch a woman in any context, or is it just on the mat? Just wondering about the mentality on this issue for those who bring it up in these discussions.
Though not a wrestler myself, I often worked out with (the non-mat stuff) and watched wrestling, and have often since I finished high school, and I have mad respect for ANYONE who competes in the sport.
From my understanding, I think nearly everyone associated with wrestling (both male and female) would prefer separate opportunities for girls wrestling in high school, but the fact is that it doesn't exist yet.
Congrats to these young ladies as well as all of the male athletes moving on to districts.

I think congratulations should also go out to the boys for going out and wrestling a girl! No matter what any of you say this is a very awkward situation for a young man to be in! Remember these are young boys who's willeys stand at attention when the wind blows! Yea I went there! Now it would be even more embarrassing if it happened when you were wrestling a boy, and that has happened. I just think it would be a lot more likely wrestling a girl. I don't think it would even have to be sexual, we men know they have a mind of their own.

Don't get me wrong I feel terrible for the young ladies when a boy refuses to wrestle them but at this age it's tough! I wish the state would get off their ass and add womens wrestling. Or at least try!

When I wrestle in the stone age our coache's daughter wanted to come out for the team. He let her, but he took me aside and said " I don't want her back tomorrow". I think this is a parents choice so lighten up guys. If her parents want to let her wrestle that is their prerogative. If a guys parents don't want him to wrestle a girl that is their prerogative!
Why don't we all stop wasting time on here and start writting to OHSAA to do something about a girls league. Because it is a tough situation for male and female to wrestle each other! Unless it is in the parents basement!!!!! Then its only tough on the parents! LMAO!

i disagree i dont know how many times i have heard boys make sexual remarks about a female wrestler. i have had to tell many kids not just from my school but others that i didnt want to hear it. they are teenage boys what do you think is going through their mind.
now once they get on the mat i hope they switch that mentallity when they are wrestling a girl, but the things i hear off the mat there is no way my girl would wrestle with boys

I also think it is funny how some people react about it...then change their reaction to fit the situation...for example:

I once talked to a coach of a Christian school who said his boys had to forfeit to any girls based on school policy. I asked him what they would do if it was in the match to go to state and he said...they can wrestle girls in that situation.

I jokingly told him that if we ever wrestled in a dual I would put a girl on the mat at every weight class and we could get an 84-0 win...he didnt even get the joke and said he would wrestle them all in that case because it didnt make sense to forfeit THAT MANY TIMES.

Not sure what you are disagreeing with, as I posted a question, not a statement one way or the other. I just don't quite get how boys can be conditioned/trained (and I think it is conditioning/training) to grab other boys in every manner imaginable and can't be conditioned to treat a girl on the mat the same way. Obviously, societal/family "norms", teaching by those coaches who won't wrestle girls, and the infrequency of facing a female wrestler can all play a role in this difference. And I can understand that comments "off the mat" get sexist sometimes. Though different of course, I coached HS football and heard (and tried to curb, but couldn't monitor everything) racist comments coming out of some players mouths any time we traveled into the city to play a team. That didn't automatically mean that those players played any differently or dirtier because of this pregame attitude. If it was apparent that they did, they got taken out. Just wondering aloud about the situation.

This info is just for you Nay Sayers, and Doubters and "Hard Core" Male Only Rule individuals out there. I don't have any girl competitors myself in my family, but I will not put down in any way families who do. I will applaud those young ladies who have put themselves in the heat of the action with the guys. Kudos to you all. My oldest son in 1989' during his Sophmore year had to wrestle a girl wrestler from Springfield North. I couldn't attend the tournament because of work that weekend, and he called and said he didn't want to wrestler her cause of her gender. I ask him who his next opponent on the mat was and he told me it was her of course. I told him to go out on the mat and wrestle your Opponent! He won by the way with no prob, and helped him get past any gender issues. My 13yr old now has wrestled many young lady wrestlers throughot his youth years and with no problem. Yes his outlook could change now being in his adolescent years, but I will help guide him through any issues he may have. Come down of your High Horse fellas, and walk with the Normal Crowd.
And bye the way, if you didn't already know.........Nemic was defeated by Rix 9-1 in Quarters last night, and Young was pinned first round. Don't know if either will get out to state, but figure Nemic will have the better chance.

I attended the Texas High School State Championships in Austin in 05' for the Women and Mens tournaments......Ohio could learn from them. Texas really puts on a show.
