Sophmore Rachel Young form Whitehall qualified for districts yesterday. She wrestled at Amanda and won two matches to take this great step. She pinned a kid from East and dec a kid from Hiilard Bradley. She works hard and loves the sport. For this honor she gets to wrestle Bertubin from Cambridge in the 1st round!

Way to go kid!

Coach -- She really looked good at sectionals -- good strength and good technique. Also saw some good athleticism even while she was warming up (the girl can jump!). She wrestled well in all of her matches. Hope she follows up her high school season with the USA and BorderWars (and other) all girls opportunities.

Very impressed by this young lady. Everyone was rooting for her all day. Also kudos go out to the kids from East, Independence, and of course Whitehall. This is not a backhanded compliment, but you represented your schools very well. Even the kids who didn't move on wrestled good.

Sorry but speaking as a Dad, She belongs on the side of the
Mat taking stats, girls wrestling boys stops being cute about
3rd grade, I know my daughter ask to try it and she was told
what all the girls that try this sport should be told by responsible
parents.... NO![/i]

1. I would venture to say that especially to the East kid and to the Bradley kid she beat, her wrestling is anything but "cute".

2. In this country, everyone deserves the same opportunity as everyone else, even if it makes you uncomfortable.

3. We do not live in a world anymore where the gender roles are clearly defined and specific...this is not the show "Mad Men"...women do not typically stay home making a potroast while cleaning and ironing while the man toils in the factory.

4. Certainly you have the right to not allow your daughter to wrestle, and also the right to refuse for your son to wrestle a girl, and I would respect both. You do not have the right to an opinion with what others determine they should do with their kids.

I certainly wouldn't want to be either of the two young men she defeated, at school today.That said, hey, the girl worked hard, she won her matches, and she proved that it can be done. Congratulations to her. I used to be against girls wrestling guys, and while I still don't think it's a great idea, there is no denying that her achievement is impressive.

Congrats, Rachel...we worked out with Whitehall a few weeks ago...she can roll and works hard in the room.

Congrats Young Lady from a time and tested Old Coach. Remember all Nay Sayers, Michaela Hutchinson winning the State Title in 06' in Alaska. I am sure this has fired up many young ladies here in the States to do well and where all their hard work can take them. I Clap my hands for you Rachel, and good luck in the future.......It's the Athlete, and Not the Gender on the Mat. If you love the sport, that is what you see. There are also several girls in the Wilmington school system hanging with the boys as well. Also in final note, watch out you fellas if Rachel Sopczak from Riverside Stebbins High School decides to compete this coming year.......This young lady could be a Phenom in any Bracket. Winners just Win, and All others just watch or complain about it. Good luck all.

As long as we're talking young ladies...

Page Nemec won her sectional @103 and will wrestle at the Akron Firestone district tournament I think. Look for her to place top four and get out. She has improved every year!

Way to go, Ladies! Congrats! It's hard enough for the guys to make it to the next level, let alone these young women. It is a testiment to your hard work and dedication.

Nemec is straight up legit, boy or girl. She is part of that first generation of female mat rat...her technique and drilling is identical to an elite male. The difference in level comes in some inherent male/female strength differences...IMO still good enough to get her to the Schott.

I know it's pointless because I'm not going to change the mind of anyone who thinks this way, but it stopped being OK to say where a girl "BELONGS" a long time ago.

Not taking anything away from these two girls, as I'm sure ythey have had to work twice as hard as the boys to prove themselves and get to where they are, but...I agree they don't belong here. I think I saw Nemec earlier in her career at a biddy tourney and she was amazing in her technique.

The boys they wrestle are put in a horrible situation. Win and you are a bully. Lose and, well, you just lost to a girl. I second the fact that this stops being cute about 3'rd grade. Not saying they shouldn't wrestle. Just saying they should get their own league.

If Ohio had girls wrestling...then sure...they dont belong on the mat with the boys...but only because it would be the rule then. These girls are proving that they belong on the mat with the boys by going through the same daily workouts, showing the same discipline in life, and in this case (as well as many others) beating the boys on the mat. We have had a co-ed soccer team at our school for years, with some of the girls doing quite well against all boys teams...should they be denied? It is ridiculous to deny these young ladies a chance simply because the OHSAA hasnt been able to keep up with the other states who have already started girls wrestling. These ladies deserve respect and recognition, not medieval thinking and treatment.

Wow, how many of you are offended by the Geico commercials? It is the 21st century and we have a non-white president and possibly could have had a female president. As a matter of fact, women are now the majority of the bread winners having surpassed their male counter parts. All the while drawing a lower salary than their equal male holding the same position and likely doing less work (i.e. surfing the web reading wrestling forums).

I've never understood this argument...that the boys have nothing to win and everything to lose. They both come to the mat with the same stakes. They have a wrestling match to win and in this case that had District qualification to lose. I've never seen or heard anyone who wrestled a female wrestler hard called a bully. As far as it not being cute. When is wrestling ever cute? I don't think cute is what they're going for.

I personally am against girls wrestling boys BUT i will not push my belief on others. As far as being a bully if you beat a girl not sure about that, my son has wrestled a couple girls before and his biggest concern was where was it ok to put his hands. there are a few questionable possitions that he could get into also he was afraid he might hurt her. I told him that if she steps on the mat she is an opponent, a wrestler and someone who wants to beat you so you wrestle them just like the next guy. just my feelings.

Coach B, thanks for the buzz kill! Being a district qualifier as a sophmore, 2nd year wrestler is huge, for anyone. Your "mat stat" remark is inane to say the least. Would you ridicule a boy if he was a mat stat? I would love for Ohio to adopt girls wrestling, until then, if a girl wants to join my team and compete, game on! I am glad she does not read this forum, she would be ashamed to know there are still people that think the way you do. Did I mention she has a 4.5 GPA, or is that not manly enough either?
