Is the show faster paced because it's in one-hour slots instead of big blockbuster time length? Because I thought the movie had potential, it just needed a good 30 or so minutes cut so it didn't take forever for the characters to get anywhere. At least it felt that way -- it has been a good 18-19 years since I've seen it, so memory might be leading to mild exaggeration.
You are correct, the original movie had to spend a good 30 minutes explaining the backstory of the gate and how Daniel figured the gate address out.
The series goes much faster pace, each episode is only 40 minutes (1 hr with commercials). The first few episodes somewhat have to "bridge" from the movie to the show since a few characters from the movie are in the show, but with different actors, etc.
The series has more comical relief than the movie too. I mean, it's still a "serious sci fi" but there are some "breaking the 4th wall" moments where the show 'makes fun of itself'.
Also, get used to Jack O'Neill being more 'funny' than hard nosed A-hole, that's the biggest difference in the movie and the series.
It was definitely worth watching if you even liked the concept in the original movie. Think about this, in 10 seasons they probably visit 100s of planets, rather than just 1.
Once you get through the series, the straight to DVD movies based on the series, were faster paced as well.
Stargate:Ark of Truth
Stargate: Continuum
I think that was their names.
