It was announced at the state tournament that next years state would be moved back a week. This was to avoid The Arnold because rooms in town were hard to come by. I called Beau Rugg at OHSAA and asked if season would start later and was told no it would start the same date Dec 3rd I think. I then asked if we would get more points to schedule meets and he said no but was thinking of proposing 1/2 point for duals. He would propose this at April board meeting. What do you think?

1/2 point for duals, I'm ok with especially if the OCC still votes on us using 5 duals vs 2 2x4's and a dual. If duals are only 1/2 are we still stuck at only 16 points allotted for tournaments?

16 points max from schedule for tournaments

3 pts for a 2 day tournament
2 pts for a 1 day tournament or quad (3 matches wrestled)
1 pt for a tri (3 teams 2 matches or 2x4 2 matches)
1/2 pt for a single dual

if you are in the OCC and your team has 5 duals you would have 2.5 pts to schedule other duals/tris

I think 1/2 point for duals is great idea. Sort of insane that getting your kid one match at a dual costs you 1 point whereas they can get 4 to 5 times as many matches at a tournament and it will only cost you 2 points.

The current system disincentivizes scheduling dual meets. Changing to 1/2 point for duals makes perfect sense to me.

Many years ago it was a dual during the week and a tournament on the weekend...no point system. Why not go back to that? Duals not tris during the week and your choice of tournament type on Friday and/or Saturday

Can we not still do this?

No...Imagine 4 tournaments in December, 4 in January, 3 in February, 11 Duals, plus post season. That would be a MINIMUM of 33 scheduling points...add another 11 if you do 2 day events on the weekends.

:sad face: I personally like Tris and especially Super Tris. Maybe they are intending to really incentivize the traditional dual.

I suppose to the degree that the new point scheme would free teams up for more non-OCC duals, teams could optimize by scheduling competitively match dual opponents outside of their conference. That could be a fan friendly approach.

ksig, I'm with you. Whatever happen to those day? I get it could be a lot so then that's where you can sit a kid here and there.

I'm not actually advocating the old system, just pointing out the way it used to be. I actually believe the opposite personally...less matches, healthier kids.

Even under the current system you can wrestle a TON of matches. You can conceivably have 60 matches going into the post season (not even counting state duals).

The longer I coach the less I like the idea of getting tons of matches. The burnout and fatigue is a real issue. Kids sometimes start the season on fire only to be just physically and mentally worn down at the end of the year. I would love to see practice start in December and meets start in January while finishing the first weekend in March. Kids often come straight from football with no rest and in this day and age when training is maximized far beyond what it ever was we are just wearing these kids down.

The most matches I ever wrestled in a season was 40 and that was all the way through state. Now kids have 40+ before sectionals. I never felt worn down the way I see kids getting now on a yearly basis.

Last year I sat with another coach and figured that it is possible to wrestle 70+matches with a 20pt schedule.
5 3pt 2 day tournys with max 10 matches each to get you 50 matches
5 1pt tri meets to get 2 matches each meet for a total of 10.

So before post season and no state duals you're already at 60 matches, now this is assuming you get every match possible in that scenario.

Throw in anywhere from 12-18 max matches for individual post season and you can almost push 80.

But that's when you step in and say, hey you don't need to wrestle take the weekend off. Teams do it all the time especially with duals.

In the past, I don't remember hardly any round robin to bracket tournaments. It use to be 2 and out except for the Hamilton Township tournament. Am I advocating we stay in gyms all weekend long? No, but I think the points is silly. You should be allowed to schedule what you want. Some of your young JV guys maybe you want to put them in every JV tournament so more mat time. Just my opinion.

It is hard to not "over" fill a season already. Let alone giving an extra WEEK of weight cutting and everything else in there. I see WHY they are doing it, because of the logistics nightmare of the Arnold, but adjustments HAVE to be made.

You should get X amount of duels/Tri's a year. To help with conference duels, and X amount of tournaments a year, not matter if they are 1 or 2 day tournaments. Sectionals, districts and State are all separate, including "State Duels". For example a 12 week regular season, should have 7-8 tournaments and 6-8 duels/tri's. If you won almost every match, you would still only have around 45 wins going into state. Depending on the size of the tournaments. Just my 2 cents, they are free, and both Abraham heads are looking up!
