If your best reasoning for giving a guy mega bucks is "we could do worse", then something is seriously wrong.
It's a big move to take a playoff team and start over with a new QB. Especially for a fragile franchise like Cincinnati that has really only become a legitimately stable franchise in the last decade. It would need to be an absolute can't miss prospect, and one they would likely have to draft outside of the top 20 (or significantly pay to trade up). You then look at the success of guys drafted in that range (many have been mentioned in this thread...Locker, Tannehill, Ponder) and realize it's probably not worth completely giving up 2 years (the year before AND rookie year) to do so. Their chances of Dalton just becoming 10-20% better is much greater, and hence, why it's such a precarious position. It's one that about 25% of NFL franchises are currently stuck in...because the QB is such an important factor in winning.
