Actually, after looking at best win and best loss, Georgia is the one that is vastly overranked. Ohio State is about where they should be. Every 1-loss team has a better win than they do and they have the worst loss.

Why aren't people complaining that Arizona and Arizona State aren't higher than OSU? Simple. OSU is a bigger name and started HIGHER. That's how the polls work.

We would eliminate 90% of the bias if they didn't rank teams until a few games into the season. Preseason rankings are usually based on A) last year, B) reputation and C) hype of certain big players coming in or returning. Unlike pro sports, there is always a huge "unknown" when talking about college sports because of how much changes from year to year.

I guess we won't know if this is actually the case until we see what the selection committee releases. True, the polls don't play direct part in determining who makes it into the playoffs. But they might have a pretty big influence.

Look at what we're doing here...people are comparing better wins and losses. There's a good chance that the selection committee will do the same. So while the polls don't determine the two best, they definitely help to boost resumes of those looking to get in. Which is why the bias seen in the polls sucks. It makes the SEC wins/losses look better than what they actually might be and makes the other conference's wins/losses look worse than what they actually might be.

Ohio State could beat Sparty by 40 and they still ain't getting in. The Canes spanking of VT took care of that. Best we can hope for this season is a nice trip to Pasadena and set the bar for a great 2015.

While true, the polls would be all over the place every week. You end up with 3 or 4 teams who all lost to one but beat the other, and with different combos. It's easy to do when you haven't played a full schedule, but 9 weeks in it's difficult to keep that standard.

The way things are looking at the moment Ohio State is destined for the Citrus Bowl. Possibly the Fiesta Bowl if they knock off Michigan State and take the B1G championship.

Barring a miracle, the Buckeyes will not make a playoff slot even if they win out. That VT loss is looming large.

It can be argued that Texas A&M derived its lofty ranking through the first month of the season on the hype generated by the SEC Network's inaugural game broadcast, a 52-28 trouncing of a South Carolina team which, barely halfway through the season, already has four losses. The win immediately propelled the No. 21 Aggies to ninth in the Associated Press poll (South Carolina's previous ranking), and they eventually vaulted all the way to No. 6 on the strength of wins over Lamar, Rice, SMU and Arkansas before dropping their next three games by a combined 91 points.

You're right. But their ranking at the time they were beat goes into the equation of current rankings. No one would talk about the win now, but if a no-name beat a #6 A&M, that no-name (especially if from the SEC) would now receive a high ranking. They will keep that high ranking with every win. If asked why they deserve the high ranking, A&M will not be mentioned... it will just be because they are so damn good!!! (re: SEC!!!)

Another way to look at it is that the other conferences aren't given a chance to play as many ranked teams as the SEC. Imagine if they B1G had 6 teams in the top 15 when the season started(based on nothing of course like the SEC); analysts would be talking about how tough the B1G is(again based on nothing). It's really a broken system.

They do. If you listen to the analysts talk, they will say that Miss. State went in and knocked off #8 LSU and then followed that up by beating #6 Texas A&M. Even though both of those teams are not at that ranking now, the analysts hype that up as if those are great wins.

Meanwhile, in the same breath they will say that Notre Dame has no quality wins. They won't say that ND beat #14 Stanford. They say that Stanford is 5-3 and ignore the fact that Stanford's losses were all pretty close losses to USC, ND, and Arizona State (well...that one wasn't as close).

So ESPN and the media controls the narrative. And they are able to hype up some wins and downplay others.

And like sleeper said, the preseason rankings are pretty much bullshit anyways.
