Really? I was pretty happy with both signings. Sure, neither really played up to what we expected, but they paid decent for them.


This year is the key. Losing Sizemore, Hafner, and I forget who opened up money for Swisher and Bourne, they need to prove they are willing to up the payroll.

^^^comment I heard on TV (can't remember who)...was that the teams that had the biggest turnarounds (Tribe, Red Sox), spent moderately but stayed away from the biggest and most sought after players.

My point exactly.

I'm not saying go after a Miggy Cabrera type but no more Brett Myers', Mark Reynolds, etc. Bourn & Swisher were two of the flashier names but weren't worth anywhere near what they were paid.

The Dolan's now see they have a manager who can make lemonade out of lemons. Imagine what he could do with some halfway decent talent?

Tribe signed David Murphy...filling a huge hole. We def needed another left handed hitter with not a lot of pop.

David Murphy

2013- .222/.282/.374 13 HR 45 RBI Stole exactly 1 base. Played in 142 games and had 476 plate appearance.
2012- .304/.380/.479 15 HR 61 RBI 10 Steals in 147 games and 521 plate appearance

The two years prior he hit .275 and .291 with similar amount of everything else.

Not sure what we are going to do with this guy? He's been an everyday player playing mostly left field but can probably play right. Brantley has left locked down...so that leaves right field for him. I wouldn't even consider him an upgrade to Raburn or Stubbs. Head scratcher on this one.

So right after Francona was named Manager of the Year, in an interview, he said that Gomes would be the every day catcher. With that being said, what area do they target? Third base? Santana can play 1st & DH. Swisher can play 1st, DH & OF. Do they pursue a 3rd baseman or role with Aviles or Chisenhall? I don't feel comfortable with Chiz as the every day 3rd baseman but the organization seems to have major wood for him.

I'm assuming they will try to go after another reclamation project/innings eating starter to replace Ubaldo/Kazmir.

well, we know the MO for this group.....always in search of lightning in a bottle. David Murphy for $6 million a year?????Really...I'd rather have Stubbs at $4mill. i don't see a major upgrade here.

I agree. The one thing I have seen that leaves some hope for optimism is that out of 170 players with qualifying at bat...Murphy was 168th in BABIP (Batting Average of Balls in Play) which would suggest he had a string of bad luck and should be in line for positive regression on that.

That's probably what they were looking at.

I have no qualms with the move. Our front office is as highly analytic as they come. I'm sure they have some sort of justification, I just wonder if we'll get to hear it.

After last year, they get a free pass. Still, SMFH on this one. It's not as if they signed this guy for chump change.

Yeah, kind of a coin-flip signing. If last year was a regression year and he reverts to form, it's a good move. If last year was an indication that at 32, he's going downhill, it's a worthless one.

But he doesn't produce. I haven't looked at his runs scored but he has been in a lineup that tradtionally scores a ton of runs. His BA has been pretty good but they why are the RBI's so low? You would think he has had plenty of opportunities with runners on base.

Also, he doesn't hit for power and he doesn't do much on the basepaths. I don't think he is necessarily a bad player but I am confused as to how he fits into the scheme. Seems like another guy who will hit 15 HR and bat .250.

The Tribe today continued the yearly business of filling spots in the organization with bodies, as they signed Mike Nagurski to a minor league contract with an invite to spring training. Nagurski has bounced around the minors and majors with a few organizations. You don't want to know his major league numbers...trust me ...you just don't. He's left handed, and that's all you need to know.

Off season not off to a good start...Joe Smith is gone to the Angels...3 years $16 million. :(

It's looking more and more that they will be contentwith the back end of the pen being Bryan Shaw and Cody Allen.

shitty, but I cant blame him. I doubt the Indians would have ponied up an extra 2 million a year.

Good for him. He deserves it. Sucks for us. Smith was outstanding his last 3 years for us.

2011- 2.01 ERA
2012- 2.96 ERA
2013- 2.29 ERA

Atleast 70 games and over 60 innings each of those year.

I am not sure how the Dolan's are going to be able to afford anyone seeing how the prices are for free agents this season.

The farm system better be ready to step up and fill alot of holes.

This is why when you choose to do a reclamation project (and Kaz was certainly that)....GET AN OPTION!:thumbdown:

I love how the Tribe brass said they're ready to spend, and yet we're seeing nothing. David Murphy? Really? How about something that is better than what we have already, not lateral moves.

Sounds like the Tigers are close to bolstering their bullpen with Joe Nathan. They traded Fister as well. My Tiger fan friends tell me this should mean a move to the rotation for Smyly.

Tribe tendered offers of a contract/arbitration to 6 players,... Including Masterson, Stubbs, Brantley, Rzepcynski, Pestano and Josh Tomlin.
Non tendered, and therefore eligible for immediate free agency were Lou Marson and Sepember sensation Matt Carson.

...A little surprised at non tendering Marson who seemed to have some trade value.
