MY SON AND I WERE HAVING A CONVERSATION ABOUT THIS... HE SAYS WRESTLE OFF'S DON'T FEEL LIKE A REAL MATCH BECAUSE... IT IS RUN BY YOUR COACH IN YOUR PRACTICE ROOM WITH KIDS YOU WRESTLE EVERYDAY. I SAY THAT IT'S EVERY BIT AS INTENSE IF NOT MORE INTENSE BECAUSE IT IS YOUR SPOT, YOUR POSITION, WITHOUT WINNING YOUR WRESTLE OFF YOU ARE RIDING THE PINE OR RESERVE. SO WE'RE LOOKING FOR HELP FROM EVERYBODY TO SETTLE THIS DISAGREEMENT.

ALSO - DOES IT MAKE A DIFFERENCE IF YOU ARE ON A BIGGER TEAM OR TIGHTER WEIGHT CLASSES?

I felt the same way your son did actually. You are right your spot is on the line but it never felt real to me. The most challanging thing for me was making weight for a wrestle off that part sucked.

Back when I was in high school (graduated 94) it was 5lb allowance for wrestle offs. At the start of the season it was best of 3. Throughout the season the #1 guy had to win once, if you called for a wrestle off you had to beat the #1 twice.

That is EXACTLY how we do it now. However, extreme acts of foolishness trump wrestle-offs. In addition, if a wrestler vacates a spot by missing a match ---leaving town, trouble, whatever (other than injury) --- they must re-challenge for the spot without the "win 2 matches stipulation"

I agree with Knightflyer, I also believe that the opportunity for a wrestle off should be there each week.

The #1 kid should have to be beat twice in a row. IMO
Also I think it is hard to wrestle off only because the kid you are wrestling off knows what you do and should know how to counter your moves. I think wrestle offs should be at a minimum 2 days prior to an event and should not have a weight restriction. If the #1 kid does not make weight (at the event) then the #2 kid steps in and the #2 kid is now varsity. Then the old #1 will have to win 2 consecutive matches to get his spot back.
The practice of wrestling off the day before a match is IMO stupid. It stresses the kids out. At this point in the season most coaches know what weight a kid is able to make. JMO

I like the idea of a scratch +5 allowance. It's impractical to wrestle "at weight" for these wrestle-offs. Very few kids are on weight 2-3 days prior to competition. However, in the case of a kid trying to drop down to challenge at a lower weight, IMO they must weigh "approximately" the same. It's certianly not fair for the lower weight guy to be giving up 10 lbs or something like that.

Also, during the regular season, I feel the coach should have final say at what he feels is best for the team. "Team" is #1 during the regular season. However, once sectionals arrive, the focus should shift to the "individual" and wrestlers should be allowed to challenge at any weight that may maximize their personal goals.

why should the coach have final say, if the other kid is good enough to win his wrestle off why shouldn't he be able to wrestle regardless if its sectionals or any other tournament.

Here is where it gets good! The age old debate " Is wrestling a team sport or an individual sport ? " IMO It is a Team sport until the regular season ends.

We used to wrestle off on Monday or Tuesday for a Thursday match and if I remember we had to be within 3lbs. for the wrestle off. I mostly remember worrying more about getting to weight than the wrestle off itself. This was also before the weight rules in place now, when I was in high school if you could make it to a weight you could wrestle at that weight.

I wish my son wrestled off. He hasn't had one in two years, they do indicators.
What are your guys thoughts when a kid says he is going a certain weight and doesn't make weight, should he just be allowed to wrestle the next weight up or should he sit?

I say if you commit you need to make weight...... If you don't make weight you sit.....
I also understand though that a coach should have the final say..... If the coach thinks that letting someone bump up that couldn't make the weight that they committed to would benefit his team better than him not being there at all than so be it..........

i think if you decide you cant make weight at the end of the week you should be aloud to go up but if its like the day before the meet then no you should just man up and make the weight.

In response to the argument about knowing what the other guy is going to do and countering because you wrestle them every day: That happens. It might change your mentality for that match because you have to know what in your arsenal you can use to beat your opponent. Also, if you do win the spot, don't you think you're going to wrestle a guy in your area maybe a couple of times a season? i.e. early tournament, then sectional/district/state.

However, if you are the #1 guy and you are being challenged by a teammate you know can't beat you, you might be a bit more risky and try stupid things. It depends on who you are wrestling in the end. Isn't that how it is in any match?

I believe that Wrestle offs are 10x as intense as a real match. You are out there trying to prove that you are the best at your weight. There is so much pressure on that 1 single match unlike at a tourny when it is strung over 4 or 5 matches. We wrestle off every week. The guy that wrestled Varsity the week before is 1 guy, if he loses he isnt wrestling that week. No "you have to beat him twice". You lose, your done. We dont have a weight allowance tho. If we dont make our weight, we dont wrestle.

The beauty of wrestling is you win the wrestle off and you're the man. No coaches picking favorites or excuses like you got to win the best of three. You wrestle. If you don't make the weight then you sit or try the next week at a higher weight. I had a guy who wrestled off every match when I was a junior, knowing that I would beat him, but he knew every move I had. He moved to Atlanta, but every time I see him I remind him that he made me a better person and wrestler by pushing me every week.

How do your teams handle dual meets? Does your coaches bump guys around all the time, or do your wrestlers know they are wrestling and what weight they are wrestling at before the meet?

Overtime wrestle offs were pretty common in our room. Of course, there were/are like 40-45 kids on the team.

What was always done in our room is that you had to be within 5 pounds of that weight to wrestle off.

Kenston JR High tends to bump kids around and fill in the weights. In a team tournament , this is needed. At the Solon Middleschool tourney Kenston started out giving up 3 weights. That went to 5 after one wrestler split his noodle open and the other hurt his arm. With that being said, you take extra kids and fill them in where you can. Another situation is you have 4 wrestlers around the same weight, but holes above that weight. You take the bigger kid and bump him up to fill the weight classes. This works until the end of the year tourneys! Then its fight for a spot. IMO

It is part of the sport! You have to win to be the man! And if you don't win then GET BETTER!!! I loved wrestle offs! We did ours on a tuesday, and we had to be within 5lbs!
