Per the FHSAA: Just received email from FHSAA with the NFHS and Bob Colgate's interpretation as straps ARE NOT TO BE CROSSED on the headgears. Of course no tape either anywhere on the headgear. Worn as the manufacture designed only.

I hate the ruling this year but we are enforcing it. The straps have been the question all year and we just now got this ruling sent to all officials in FL and all coaches in FL.

If there gonna make this rule they should not be able to punish the kids if there head gear falls off, or the straps fall in their face... I understand the obsessive tape rule but this is just dumb, so i hope they dont enforce such a rule in ohio

I have recommended both the coaches and officials advisories here in FL to seek change this offseason on this ruling.

I think you can cross the head straps, and you can put one single connecting line of tape down the middle of the straps as well if i'm correct about the ohio ruling.

yes and the strap holders are legal per NFHS

I remember back wrestling we didn't have this problem, nor do college wrestlers, why? Because they are worn so tight they are not coming off! Headgear, like college basketball shorts and othe uniform items have become more of a fashion trend then what they are intended for, etc....if you tighten them and wear them correctly they will not come off!

What kills me is, somewhere, some people who have the power to affect these sort of things got together and decided, for no apparent reason, to put in a new rule where none was needed. It's like the new weight classes, the figure four on the head, the alpha weigh-ins, the dual meet championship. Do these people just wake up one day and decide, "I'm bored, I think I'll change a few things in high school wrestling today"?

The mandatory point for an accidental eye poke...remember that gem?

Here's the bulletin for this year:

HEAD GEAR: is the next reminder topic to start the season. Tape is to be
kept at a minimum, a one inch strip holding straps in place, and /or a half-inch rim around the outer edge to hold a foam extension in place
(cauliflower ear protection). Tape is not to be across the ear guard itself. If the wrestler appears at the mat with tape across the head gear it is a technical violation, start the injury clock and award the opponent one point for the technical violation. The head gear is to be worn as the manufacturer intended. Blocking the holes on the ear guard could cause damage to the ear drum. That reason adds another sensible reason along with all our contagious skin reasons, as well. Officials must inspect wrestlers.

The biggest problem I see with the headgear is it falling off. I feel that if it falls off more than once it should go against injury time. Was coaching a match this year where the oppenent's headgear came off twice, took roughly 15 seconds to fix. Then the 3rd time it comes off, the ref says get a new set - so the ref proceeds to help the kid get the new set to fit for roughly 3 minutes. THEN, our kid has a nose plug in, and when it falls out the ref tells him to just hand it to the coach, keep the match going. ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME? You let a kid have a 3 minute break from headgear but you can't stop the match to clean up the bloody noseplug sitting on the mat and to quickly put a new plug in? REDICULOUS (steps off soapbox)

YES CRUISER..... THAT MATCH.

So, just to be clear, what is the rule in Ohio as far as having the head straps crossed on the headgear? I understand that Florida has ruled on (thanks, Fab) but what is the current rule in Ohio?

Wish had known this rule early in season. My son has a single strip of tape on one side and was hit with the above penalty point. Did not lose the match but killed the momentum in the match at the time. Curious , would seem ref could say something before match starts. Be a shame to see any future matches for any wrestler decided because of tape .

Yes I do see it as a problem in FL, kids all the time having their headgears loose and them coming off in matches, sliding down over the eyes, around the neck, etc.....We always tell them tighten em, they don't listen, so of course we would have them tape them on during matches when problems arrised but that is no longer an option.

Ive noticed that sometimes with the headgear, the kids will have the tightened enough to where it should be fine, but the shape of the kids head still allows the strap to slide down and get into their eyes, that's where taping your straps together comes in handy, really.
