The writers may have just wanted to call attention to the two cops so the viewer would see the symbolism (and I admit I missed it both times). In terms of drama or suspense, that you can get infected by being scratched is not interesting. So if that means anything, it's that there are ways to contract the virus (maybe it's mutating) OTHER than being bitten or scratched. First thing that jumps to my mind is in animals you eat, or perhaps rats or mosquitoes. Maybe people are contagious before showing outward signs, so that would be a possibility too.

What else could the scientist have told Rick that was so important, yet not important enough for Rick to share with the group? I don't think Rick would risk taking an important secret to his grave every time he goes out to tussle with walkers. That would be irresponsible, which Rick is not.

I thought the scientist ran blood tests, and IMO that leaves only a handful of possibilities - someone is pregnant, someone is an asymptomatic carrier or has an immunity (which presumably gives the scientist hope to persevere), or someone got a really shitty draw and has a terminal illness. The first and the last are the only possibilities you could logically conclude Rick would keep to himself.

As for the walkie talkie episode, the scientist told him he'd lost contact with other CDC's and, to his knowledge, was the last one active. And that could be the "....well, it doesn't matter". People saying it would be too obvious if Laurie was pregnant...well, that's the point of foreshadowing.

Either way, the series is heading down the right path... When the Governor plot comes to fruition, there will be lots of bloodshed and it won't just involve zombies. This is rumored to take place in S3 and these last few episodes seem to be hinting at a break-up within the group. They won't be on the farm much longer either, just like the novel.
