We've got a live draft on Wednesday night, and one of our remote people just backed out this morning. He wants me to draft for him.

My immediate response was that the Denver Broncos defense was begging to go #2 overall, and thanks for the responsibility. But would you legitimately draft for an opponent? "Auto" draft (i.e. have a ranked list of players, and always choose highest available unless that position is filled on the roster)? Or, go with the "fuck you dumbass, you're getting 2 kickers and 2 defenses" strategy?

FWIW, I'll probably end up going with an auto-draft strategy but I don't feel good about it.

Also, he's made it clear he wants me to legitimately draft for him. "Go ahead and draft my players (I trust you to make prudent decisions). I want an Excellent QB in first round (like Rodgers or brees) Followed by rb,wr,wr,rb,te. After that, pick as you deem fit."

Yes we do it in our league when someone can't make it though we joke about picking a K at pick 1 for said person LOL.

You hunt him down and kill everyone he loves. Make him watch.

Next year, he won't screw around when it comes to fantasy drafting.

Have him rank the players and send you the list and go by that. That's the only way you can do. If he puts the order of positions he wants filled first, use that list and continue that way. The keeper of the list needs to keep it confidential. It's really about the only fair way to do under the circumstances.

Option 2, boot him out and find a replacement quickly.

We always have the person pre-rank them on the site. You can then set the preference in which order to draft the position. In essence, he can set the order of positions he wants drafted, and then pre-rank players to fit that order pretty well. Make him do it himself, otherwise do the autopick.

For our live draft (always at someone's house) for my $$ league anyone who can't make it HAS to be available by phone, skype, w/e.

They also have to supply a ordered/ranked list of players so they can be "auto picked" if they can't be reached by phone.

For instance, I am on a long business trip (4-5 weeks) and will miss our draft. However, I am going to be available by phone in case, but will be on Skype the whole draft with the guys.

Last season we had a guy who got stuck and had to work that day, I "auto" drafted for him based off of his list and/or a "top 200" list.

I thought the point of online live draft was to be able to use the autodraft feature.

Yeah, the draft was not online. It was live (in person). He ended up sending me his top 3 for his first pick (3rd overall) and then said best available at x/y/z positions for the remaining rounds. Ended up pretty easy although his team kinda sucks.

Thats not terrible. I still would have taken the time (if I was him, not you) to pre-rank my guys online and print it off with the order you wanted positions selected. It isnt a foolproof system, but it helps ensure you get guys you really are targeting as well as snagging your sleepers etc.
