Has anyone else caught the fact that ABC (I think) is rerunning old Olympic wrestling matches? To date I've dvr-ed the 1996 and 1972 Olympic wrestling highlight matches. 1972 was AWESOME not only because we got 6 medals but also because I've never seen it in totality. Can you guess which come from behind match sent me leaping off my couch at lightening speed? The 1996 rerun I did not get to watch because my husband erased it while I was in Hawaii to record a crappy B movie. (No this did not end our marriage, but did cause many a deadly looks.)

Hummmmm... Trick question I believe. He wasn't in the 72 Olympics. You had the Peterson brothers, Dan, Wayne Wells, Richard Sanders, and Chris Taylor.

I have very few passions in life. I'm not sold out for the NFL or any particular team. The same can be said for MLB, NBA, and even the NHL. I can name two teams in the MLS, and even less in the WNBA. But, when it comes to our nation's military, something strikes deep.

For those who have put their lives on hold to join for any myriad of reasons, it gets to me. How much more for those who have joined with the mission to answer their country's call, they choose to enlist or even re-up in order to be a part of our nation's defense during times of war or conflict. Should those soldiers return, be it unscathed or marred, I usually become emotioinally unstable in their presence, more out of respect than anything else. I do my best to show my appreciation.

Should a soldier not make it home alive... that's when the emotions really swell. I've posted about the little spot in Sunbury before (southeast corner of SR 37 & SR 3), but that is hollowed ground in my eyes. I recently stopped by after returning from Erie, PA. I think the site is up 183 soldiers who have lost their lives in Afghanistan or Iraq.

One particular soldier in the group is SGT Jeremy M. Hodge. On October 10th, 2005, as the story was relayed to me, the platoon leader walked in and asked for a volunteer for the lead humvee. Knowing most of the guys in his group were weary from the last three days of missions, SGT Hodge stepped up -not really giving anyone else a chance to answer yay or nay - and volunteered. In some small way, my good friend returned alive because of SGT. Hodge's act of bravery.

I never knew SGT Hodge. But now, I'll never forget him.

I feel this way about many, many nameless and faceless military members. I cry like a baby at the first trumpet blare of taps, and all the way to the last echo of the National Anthem.

Ok, back to my original statement. My favorite match in the 1972 Olympics was the come from behind pin by Peterson on Morgan from Cuba. (I can't remember Morgan's first name, nor do I believe I can spell it if I did.) I've tried to find the match on youtube, but alas I can't find it. Flowrestling has a link to it, but for some reason the link doesn't work anymore. However, I can give a quick recap. Peterson was going to be eliminated from the games if he didn't win. (The old negative point scoring systerm.) In the third period he was down 3-0. He finally pinned him. I went nuts.
