How many times can a mat be resurfaced?
I'm assuming a mat 40 years old would not be rolled up and moved often.
You may or may not be dumb a lot of the time. I don't know you personally to know the answer to that. However, the fact that you picked up on my sarcastic tone tells me you get it right more often than not.
We can no longer roll either set of mats we practice on. We use mat tape to try to stop the splitting. (ps: I think you can only resurface once. I could be wrong on that.)
In an effort to try to raise money in order to buy a mat, then-head coach Mr. My Brother, walked into the AD's office and said we are going to host tournaments in order to do three things: #1) Enter a tournament that is not poorly run***, 2) run a tournament which benefits the level of competition and 3) raise money to buy mats.
After four years of running AT LEAST 3 tournaments, how much money do we have??? around $500. Hence one reason my brother is no longer the head coach.
*** denotes us deciding to run JV tournaments stemmed from two things... #1) the unorganization we experienced at other's tournament and b) the insistance (insistence???) of using tournament software. After experiencing those two things we said,"That's it. We're running our own."
It started with two JV tournaments, which led to a youth tournament being added, which led to a freshmen tournament being added. Our varsity tournament came from a chain of circumstances that I will type because currently, a) I can, and b) I'm stalling to write a one page paper on "Reinforcing Appropriate Behavior".
Varisty tournament 'X' was cancelled due to snow. In order to get those matches in, we joined another tournament. Realizing this wasn't the best fit for our kids, in the caoches room we bagan talking about tournament options for the following year. As we looked at the landscape of tournaments, we saw a lack of individual, bracket style tournaments. Especially as the season approached the post-season.
Our philosphy was/is in December and early January, get matches. Build up video files of your matches in order to have a database in which to look into. But, as the post-season looms, we need our kids to realize that it's go-time! If you lose, you drop to the consolation bracket and the pressure gets turned on.
We also saw a host of dual meet tournaments, of which (the format), we are not fond of.
So, we devised our 14-team, 12-man bracket tournament.
