I think that spending what you can afford should be appreciated... A wedding shouldn't be about a price tag or a "theme" of expensive crap... A wedding should be what you make of it. If its at the smallest church and the reception is in the basement of that church, does that automatically mean your wedding sucked? If thats the case then you married the wrong girl. The RIGHT girl will appreciate the money you spent, the love you give her, and will be happy that the moment with the man she loves has finally come.

As for a ring... I could care less what MY ring looks like... Give me a plain steel ring and I am happy, but for the girl I believe you save your money and put a rock on her finger that blinds people when she's driving down the road... That way another guy is sure to see it a mile away :)

I would never even think to ask my wife how much her dress costs. I don't know how that's any of my business or why I would even care!

I certainly didn't shop for it with her. I hate shopping. She knows it. My presence wouldn't have added to her enjoyment of trying to find a dress.

When I saw my wife for the first time on our wedding day I didn't notice the dress at all. The dress is not what makes her beautiful to me. To this day I couldn't tell you what it looks like.....but the point is....the dress has nothing to do with my opinion, how much it costs and if I like it or not.

The dress was ALL about my wife and how it made her feel when she wore it. It could have cost $500 or $20,000.00. I really don't know nor does it matter.

I got married in 1980. I think our entire wedding cost was around $4000 and it was a pretty big wedding. I am guessing my wife spent less than $300 on her dress-and it was fantastic...although I really couldn't have cared less what the dress looked like!

Have had two daughters get married so far and each of them have different styles. The younger of the two was married first and didn't feel the need to impress anyone. Got married in a gazebo by a lake and had the reception in a hall on the same property. Very nice for under 10 grand. Dress was $450.00. The oldest is a different story. The wife and I drew the line at 15 g's and she and her husband took care of the rest. I'm guessing another 7-10. Dress was $1,200.00.

Wife's dress was in the $400-$700 range, with a few hundred also on the sizing/alterations.

I think our entire wedding for 100 guests ended up costing less than most people's bar tab (we had no alcohol). Our most expensive things were the photographer, then the videographer.

I don't understand ANYONE wanting to drop that much on a damn wedding. Hell, most people regret getting married once they get home anyway. :D

My fiance's dress cost just under $400. I have no idea what it looks like because she doesn't want me to see it until our wedding day. I'm assuming it's white, but other than that I don't really care.

Definitely. I went to a friend's wedding where they spent $15k on alcohol alone. They're currently seperated and living with other people. (They may be divorced, but last I heard they weren't yet.) I went to another friend's wedding with maybe 50 guests in a small church and the reception was in a vfw hall. As far as I can tell they are still happily married. The money had nothing to do with it. My friend's with the expensive wedding are more concerned with impressing other people and money than they were with making each other happy.

Diamonds are stupid. I think there are plenty of guys who don't care if she's wearing a ring or not. On top of that, diamonds are only valuable because somehow we've been tricked into thinking they mean something. If the wedding industry decided quartz was the thing that "proved how much you love your wife" then I have no doubt suckers would be paying $10k for a quartz ring...

Even knowing that I still paid way too much for the ring. :(

Exactly...the one saving grace I had with my ex was that she was a daddy's girl. Her parents paid for everything. I honestly have no doubt that when she gets married her dress will cost in the thousands.

My fiancee and i are getting married at the courthouse before we leave for New Zealand.

We'll have a nice outdoor gathering at a relative's property in Sunbury, and we'll have a bunch of guests, and the parents will be buying the food, alcohol, etc.

My mother is a former professional photographer (worked at it for just a few years out of college, but she is still very good), so she'll be doing the photos and the like.

And, as we're moving to New Zealand, that will be our honeymoon. :D We're going to have a couple day layover in Fiji on the way, so that should suffice.

She bought a really pretty dress, not a wedding dress, for about $100 at this great vintage store in Delaware. She loves it, and will be wearing that at the gathering in Sunbury.

All in all, we're essentially spending nothing on it. And it is exactly what she wanted, and is thrilled.

That is the way to do it. :D

My wedding is coming in around $60,000-$65,000. I know that sounds like a lot (shit, it really does), but in New York, that is nice but not over-the-top wedding for 200 people. Good thing Websurfinbird's and my parents are chipping in! Didn't realize how expensive this stuff is ...

My sister's getting married in July and I think her dress with tailoring and taxes is going to be between $600-$700. I went with her when she was shopping for it and it's almost impossible to find anything with a base price (before taxes and tailoring) less than $400. And we went to 7 dress shops in central Ohio in three days!

They're inviting 580 people to their wedding and the whole shindig is going to be around $10,000 (my parents are paying $4,000 and his are paying $6,000 because most of the guests are their people and he's an only child so they'll never have to pay for another wedding).

Good Lord! They are inviting 580 people and are only paying $10,000?!?!

I'm at right around $10,000 for my wedding, and we're going to be having 150 guests at the most. It sucks because I have a huge family...so it really cut into the number of people would could invite. 150 people fills up really quick, and we're really nervous that the room is going to be a super tight fit.

Back to the topic at hand.

Fab my dress cost $1,000 plus a $600 flat rate for alterations (that may or may not be too much but mom thought it was just easier to do everything in the shop and that was their price). Though that may be more than some spend considering the dress normally retails for $5,000 I got a steal. It is an absolutely gorgeous Reem Acra dress. I won't go into too many details here because my fiance is on here.

For women who want to wear the more traditional gown I highly suggest going to a sample sale. Now I do not mean a crazy hectic one where hundreds of women fight over one gown. Look for the small boutiques and see when they are having a sale. Most will let you set up an appointment and you will likely be the only one in the store (along with whomever else you bring with you of course). This is how I did it and it was great. I got to try on about 10 dresses and never felt rushed. Since I hate shopping and trying on clothes in general this helped make this a very good experience for me.

those bitches are crazy. that being said, i'll probably have a $5,000 allowance for my dress, but i am an only daughter and my parents have told me they'll pay for the wedding and expect to spend about $40,000 total (i have a gigantic family that will have to be invited, and we're irish.. my brother's bar tab for his wedding 8 years ago was about $15,000).

not to mention the fact that the dress will basically be ruined by the morning....my wife was all out in the parking lot with the bottom of the dress dragging on the ground....not to mention after she started drinking and dancing
