Always sweet, but it still doesn't help people comprehend how small we really are. None of us can REALLY comprehend how large the sun is--our brains don't work on that large of a scale.

Humans are at the same time minuscule and very large. The fact that always brings that dichotomy to bear for me is that the elements that make up our bodies down to the atomic level. They things that enable us as a species, the elements that make up life as we know it are not from earth. The heavy elements that are essential for the creation of life were forged in the heart gigantic stars trillions of light years away that exploded billions of years ago. that provides a measure of perspective.

If you would rather bypass the process of discovering and attempting to understand the scale of the known universe that is an option

How did the supreme being come into creation?

That's the rub. I couldn't find a convincing answer to that question during my 12 years of catholic education so I stopped believing.

This is not a religious topic, so I will steer clear of the questions asked, someone made a comment and I simply said that believing in a supreme being does not exclude someone from believing we are extremely small in the universe.

If anyone really wants to discuss the questions, feel free to PM me or start another topic.

Have you stopped believing in the universe since there is no convincing, or definite answer in how it came to be? Serious question, because the same logic can be applied.

Religion is a distraction created by humans trying to make each other feel bigger than they are.

The problem with this kind of stuff is that religious people are too defensive. They won't open their minds enough to accept things. Not all of them, I'm certainly not saying that--in fact the number is shrinking by the day IMO. I have no problem with religion but people need to stop making it something it's not.

Fortunately, I'm not religious, so I've been able to open my mind enough to accept Thing.

Do I believe in the existence of the universe as a concept? Is that the question? because I absolutely do. The universe as we know it is more tangible than it has ever been before. When looking at the totality of it and looking at the options that I have available to try to understand it. Between creationists, intelligent design advocates and the scientific community. I picked the scientific community because they are making efforts to understand the physical universe, the other two camps don't make an effort. They declare that a supreme being dictated everything that has been and will be. That's a pretty lazy approach. But for me the most basic fact of physics is that matter can not be created or destroyed. Matter can be transformed and is every second of every day to generate energy. Matter can not be created, it can only transformed. That means that the notion of a creator is rendered moot. People who believe can look at the same facts and come to the opposite conclusion as is their prerogative
