I fully support the kids right to protest. I also fully support the right of the schools to punish them for it. Do I think more gun control laws are stupid? Yes. Do I think we should protect kids with our guns? Yes.
There is another walk out scheduled for April. I will be pulling my 8th grader iou off school that day and taking him to the gun range to teach him real gun control, which is of course hitting a target.
posted by HereticI'd say the key would be to include those in authority and not simply protest/walk out against their wishes. Since it's a school where those in authority do have legit control (in theory) over the kids, going against them and not working with them could lead to suspensions, detentions or whatever.
Really, your post doesn't make much sense. The students aren't protesting against those people in authority like they would be in the examples you gave. They're posting against something (shootings) that would also affect those same people in authority, so it kind of comes down to whether those people in authority support their protest. If they do, cool; if they don't, it's up to the kids as to whether they're willing to accept the consequences.
So the students aren't really protesting and they don't have the right to protest. The administrators are protesting by making students stand outside.

For those calling for suspensions, did that really happen where you were from (for missing school)? I left school early on multiple occasions and never got more than a slap on the wrist. Got caught playing hooky for two days and had to meet with the principal. Why would you get a suspension for skipping half a class?

I went to the school district next to you (I think, Champion)... nobody gave a shit what you did if you had good grades, played sports, and weren't a fuck up. That said, if you protested this there, you'd be made fun of forever.
Hell, in high school, we kids loved any opportunity to get out of class for a bit. Fire drills, pep rally's, smoking a cig between classes, etc. So, I can't blame a good amount of these kids who are doing this just to get out of class for a bit. You KNOW there's kids who are doing it for precisely this reason.
I don't really care. At least they're not destroying property, intimidating teachers, or teachers hitting kids over the head with bike locks and so on.
I do think that this was more important to people on Twitter and Facebook than anybody else.

That’s correct. Sounds accurate for us, too, but I also agree that a lot of kids probably joined in to get out of class for a few minutes. What years were you there?
