Yes, she should finish the dishes first before going to bed. (don't tell my wife I said that)

Not divorced, but I was in a long term relationship where we lived together for yrs that I got out. No funny stories unfortunately, we just weren't right for each other. Probably the hardest decisions I ever had to make, our lives were very intertwined obviously, thankfully no kids. I was very releived initially to remove the stress.
posted by like_thatI was going to say I feel like most on OC have been in long term marriages. Since most of you have sustained your marriages, how about you all share your best practices lol?
This year I will have been together 29 years with my wife after dating her for 4.
THE "best practice" in my opinion is to choose carefully... very, very carefully. Choosing the right girl will be the best/worst decision of your life.

why would choosing the right girl be the worst decision of you life?
Not my story, but a guy I went to high school with. Chuck was the biggest player I ever met. So smooth and I used to wish I had half of his game. He got married to a really nice girl, Nancy, who had a great job and they had 2 kids. He never stopped cheating on Nancy. Finally he met Suzy, who "counseled" him that he should get divorced. He was sleeping with the Suzy too... So he divorces Nancy and marries Suzy. His kids go to the wedding and when it starts getting late his sister Amanda takes the kids back to Nancy's house. When Amanda comes back to the wedding, she says something vaguely nice about Nancy, and Suzy gets PISSED and starts a fist fight with her because of it. Chuck grabs Suzy and pulls her away. A friend of mine, Tom grabs Amanda and takes her away from the wedding and they go out and continue to have a good time. A couple of hours later, Chuck calls Tom to tell him that on the limo ride back to the hotel Suzy was still pissed, grabbed a champagne bottle and started hitting Chuck in the head. He's a cop and doesn't want any kind of domestic abuse charge, so he tells the limo driver to stop. He grabs the box full of wedding presents, gets out of the limo and starts walking down the highway with the box under his arm. He wants to know if Tom can come get him. So Chuck gets divorce number 2...

Pretty hard to follow with them.

Pretty happy that I have some brain cells left.

I was doing okay up to the point Amanda said something vaguely nice - who the heck was Amanda again?

The way I read it, it's pretty clear who she was.

Lol i tried... it was much worse when i didn't have names. Amanda was Chuck's sister.

I tend to skim very quickly, and Amanda slowed my roll.

It sucked.
I was married for 4 years. My exwife was physically abusive and she convinced my son to stab me. Luckily, he tried and only got me in the shoulder.
Will celebrate 8 years this summer.
My best friend got divorced 3ish years after he married a HS/MS sweetheart. They had a 1 year old at the time. It was awful for him. She is a skank, left him for someone else immediately. Said she never cheated. She's always had issues, in HS her dad left her mom -- her dad is a nympho and will screw anything and anyone (supposedly).
Now, my aunt and [former] uncle are divorcing. I believe they've been married over 30 years. He's an alcoholic and has been for sometime. He recently lost a law enforcement job for showing up on calls drunk. My aunt has never been happier, says my mom, and their relationship has gotten better without him in her life. Overall, it's a positive one. My cousin slammed his dad on the ground because he showed up drunk and abusive. Said they've never gotten along. Claims to never really have a dad.

Not always. Guy in the town I live in married a girl who used to be quite down to earth/not materialist then she started running with the "Coach purse" crowd. Girl started shopping like a fiend, to the point where the guy had to take on a second job to support her "habit." They have two kids and you'd think it would be cheaper to keep her but he'd probably be better off paying child support.
As a side note, my girlfriend's son ran into him at a bar and the dude is completely miserable. Every time you see him in a family picture he looks like the only one who has had his dog kicked.

Jesus man, that's terrible.
So many people think domestic violence is a one way street....
