Just heard from a long-time business associate of mine.
Lost his brother this morning to the COVID-19 virus. He'd been on a ventilator for about three weeks.
38 years old. No known underlying health issues.
That's now 2 relatives of people I know dying from it who were under 40 years old and who had no underlying health problems.
Fucking bullshit.

posted by justincredibleI remember once vball scolded me for creating like 5 threads in one day. "What're you trying to set a record for the most threads created in a day?!?!"
Just imagine how good you'd feel about yourself if you'd actually pulled off that record. What a wonderful thing to share with your grandchildren oneday.

posted by HereticVball had a fun day during the NFL season when, as a Browns fan on the Browns thread, he openly cheered for Nick Bosa and San Fran over the Browns when they played because of still being butthurt about Baker planting the Okie flag after they beat the Bucks.
It didn't go over well for some reason and, suddenly, he made a "people are getting too snooty, so I'm out" goodbye post.
I can’t believe I forgot why he took his ball and went home. The best part is he was legitimately surprised and butthurt that every Browns fan came at him for it. Probably the one and only time the Browns thread was unified in this site’s history.
Edit: S&L should go back and read the thread, because it wasn’t just one post by vball.

So they just put up a really interesting chart at the Task Force briefing. Peak influenza like illness - two peaks during flu season around 7-8% of doctor visits, and a third peak mid-March just below that. The third peak is Covid-19. I don't know if that was actually mid-March or late March, but it's the early/beginning of quarantines.
Imagine the conspiracy nuts will go crazy with that. Along those lines, I'm a little surprised after a month in quarantine to see new cases still hitting peaks in Ohio and IL and other places. Probably a function of testing capacity, otherwise that doesn't make much sense

Well the prison testing also started on the 13-15th at 2 prisons in Ohio. That was 367 people

FFS why didn't you tell us he works for Gilead and this was Remdesivir?!? I could have made bank!
Let me know the next time your friend posts an update.
edit: You can actually search EIDD-2801. It's a drug similar to remdesivir. I'm just surprised to see anything else that far along in Stage 3 clinical trials.

I know that the jails in Marion County have been hit large. That county's numbers have skyrocketed over this past week and I think a good part of that is jail numbers.

posted by Dr Winston O'BoogieDo you actually know anything about how doctors and coroners determine a cause of death? They don't sit in a room and have meaningless debates like this. There are specific standards and protocols they use and tgenn they have to certify with their professional license. They don't fudge numbers to make some sort of political statement.
I know all too well what goes into these decisions. Last year I had family member become very weak from cancer and ultimately have a heart attack which killed him. Our family was asked whether we would like to have cancer or heart attack listed on the death certificate as the cause of death. This stuff happens all of the time. Many people who die from natural causes die due to multiple reasons. It can be very sujective which of those reasons is listed on the death certificate.

That $2K/month plan is so ridiculous. Why on earth does it include 16 and 17 year olds??

They just need to get unemployment straightened out and end these monthly stim plans. Cut a check to essential employees that equals the extra $600 per week that unemployment will eventually give and be done with it. People aren't going to go back to work if they can just sit home and make 4k+ a month.

I think that they just did the stimulus checks based upon income because it is any easy way to determine who is eligible quickly. If you start giving out extra money to "essential" employees, it opens up a gray area to which jobs are "essential."

It just seems a bit unfair that people who sit home get an extra $600 a week for unemployment and the people making $10-$12 an hour working in grocery stores and the like get nothing. How can you justify the first part and not give anything to people that had to put their health along with their familys at risk?

Suppose that a Walmart worker is making $12/hour. That is $24,960 for the year. If you give them an extra $600/week, that is $56,160 for the year. That is more than many professionals working from home make.

Not $600 for every week. Just as long as the people who are literally sitting at home get a FREE $600 every week. The difference is the Walmart employee will actually be working during a pandemic for that extra money.

Maybe is some cases, but I'm not sure how I feel about paying the 16-year old working the register more than her teacher makes.
