In that case getting a hotel or airbnb in DC is well worth the convenience.

Gimme them food recs.

Also, curious if you've been to that newish casino out near National Harbor. Is it worth checking out? I'm not a big gambler, but will throw a few bucks at the slots every now and then.

Pizza Paradiso, GOAT pizza and great beer list. Founding Farmers for Breakfast/Dinner.

My opinion on casinos, you been to one, you've been to them all. Worth it if you enjoy casinos (having not been to that one you mentioned but have been to others).

I have been.  I would say it's more/less like Jack Casino in Cincy.   Not a big casino guy though, so to me at the end of the day they are all the same.  I went back to the pm i sent auto on the old site a little over a year ago and this is what I sent him regarding food and other non touristy things to see.

-Roosevelt Island, most people don't go here because it is out of the way
-National Arboretum, likewise
-Meridian Park, pretty close to U street and great place to run steps. Google it
-Eastern Market is a cool area, and if you are around Sunday the market is nice to check out.

Airbnb neighborhoods if you want to stay like a local: Logan Circle/U Street/Shaw/ Adams Morgan/Dupont. Can't really go wrong with any of those neighborhoods, I think Logan/U Street/Shaw is more centralized though for shit to do. Also have to be careful with Shaw, if you go too far out it can be sketchy. If you choose shaw send me the link and I can tell you if it's a solid area.

Food:

-Thip Khao: just email them now and book a reservation. You're welcome. Great Laotian place. It's in Columbia Heights, which is about a mile from U street, but worth an Uber trip and Columbia Heights is a solid area.

-Bad Saint: Also in columbia heights. It was voted the 2nd best new restaurant in the US. Only problem is they only have 27 seats and seat people in waves (530, 730, and 9). If you are in DC friday, you would have to get in line by 330 to get a table. Don't even bother trying on saturday. It's amazing, but I have the luxury of being off every other friday and it's only a few blocks from me.

-Rose's Luxury: Voted best new resturaunt in the US a couple years prior to Bad Saint. Also one of those places you have to get in line early. If you watch Fuck That's Delcious on Vice, they went here episode 1.

-Le Diplomate: Great french place

-Barcelona: Spanish Tapas

-Agora: Turkish great for bottomless brunch (dinner is good too)

-Cava: Same concept above

-Keren: Ethiopian/Eritrean, best you can get in DC. I recommend eating on your last night and giving yourself time to shit the next morning though.

Doi Moi: Great Thai food

Florida Avenue Grill: Soul Food, has been open in DC since 1944 and nothing has changed. A meal for one person can serve a family of 3.

Also would like to add since that list:

-himitsu (also need to show up early kinda like bad saint)

-timber pizza, I haven't been yet, but it has been getting a lot of hype for best pizza in DC.  It was voted the best resturaunt in DC this past year I believe.  It's right by himitsu.   FWIW I dont think any pizza place in DC can hold a candle to anywhere in NYC.

-tail up goat, michelin star

-Lapis, great afghan place

-the royal, great place for cocktails

-the columbia room, also a great place for cocktails. It's prefixed so you have to reserve a table and pre pay with your reservation

-The dabney - michelin star and the price isn't bad for a michelin star.  It's in Blagden Alley.

Beer bars/ breweries/distilleries

-Churchkey

-Merdian Pint

-Dacha Beer Garden

-Garden District Beer Garden

-Jack Rose, they have 2687 bottles of whiskey on their wall

-Right Roper Brewery (they have a bar/resturaunt location and also a tasting room location)

-Atlas Brewery

-Greenhat  Distillery (gin)

-Jos a Magnus Distillery (atlast, greenhat, and Jos A are all near each other)

If you want more recs, let me know.

I'd agree with like-that's list, great stuff on there.

I've had some drunken nights at Churchkey and Jack Rose. (Never a good idea at a Scotch bar to point to a bottle and say, let me try that one...when hammered)

I've been to the MGM recently, went on Christmas Eve. I like it. It is clean, nice, and your typical MGM.

I'd also add a few places off of 14th:

  • Chicken +Whiskey (fast chicken place with a bar in the back)
  • Blackjack
  • Maple (in Columbia Heights)
  • Little Coco's
  • If you want some Ohio: There is a Jeni's ice cream

Place near Jack Rose: Bar Charlie.

A bar I have a soft spot for near Dupont circle: The Big Hunt

Fun year ahead.

Myrtle Beach for a week over the 4th of July with a bunch of family + kids.

Long weekend in Chicago in September. No kids.

Week all-inclusive in Riviera Maya in November. No kids.

We are also doing a couple of nights at Kalahari with a group of friends and all our kids and then potentially a 4 or 5 day weekend to friends place in the UP.

If you can get a ticket, the African American Museum is great. It will take most of the day.

Otherwise, yeah the NPG is great. Air and Space is pretty good, but if you can make your way out to it, the ones near Dulles is very good as well. It has one of the space shuttles as well as an SR-71. It is not as big as the one in Dayton, but it is not bad either.

If you are willing to pay, the Newseum is legit and so is the spy museum.  A little change of pace from the well known (and free) Smithsonian museums.

I enjoyed the spy museum, and wasn't as packed as the Air and Space.

Thanks for suggestions. We get in early afternoon on a Thursday before the A-10 tournament, so only have time for 1 museum.
